As we all know, VW wanted the Ghia to look like a sports car but didn’t want to deal with the temperament of a sports car and ensuing issues, so basically made a sporty looking detuned car.
Nothing wrong with that as we also know, but my friend Josh and I decided to build a version that Karmann never offered but maybe should have.
We bought this late 74 Ghia project to restore. Car was painted several years ago by the prior owner who never got around to assembling it. He had it painted an ugly shade of yellow, and had some sort of plastic soundproof coating applied. We decided to strip it from the visible areas but keep it on those areas covered by interior.
The plan is to repaint it Porsche Slate Grey with a red stock style interior and Porsche 912 spec engine, stock single plate gear box rear disc brakes, slight drop with replica Fuchs, some suspension mods to improve handling.
We are keeping the chrome and trim.
Basically the car will look a factory 74 but with a different color scheme and lots of performance modification similar to what Porsche was doing with 912s.

Sounds like an awesome project and I look forward to watching the modifications you make.

Cool project idea!
A Porsche 912 engine would essentially be a supped up dual port.
It would be neat to make the engine look more like a Porsche engine with the bypass oil filter and all of that. |

Leave the 912 engine for the Porsche guys. Sell it and build a nice 1915 or stroker and you'll still have some money in your pocket.

I like the idea, looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
It's too bad a 901 5 speed is such an intrusive non-reversible modification. A dogleg 5 speed in a Ghia would be magic. _________________ Currently own:

We thought about a five speed, but the single plate stock trans has better gearing for a Ghia. The five speed was really only suitable for the 911 engine even though you could get it as an option in a 912.
We’re going with the Porsche engine because I have most of the parts in my hoard and yes, I see your point Glenn, but it’s more about creating a “what if” or even “what should have been” situation.
And yes, it will have all the accoutrements of a period 912 engine circa 1969 when they built the last ones. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Nah, I like the big bumpers on the late cars, goes with the big everything theme on 72-74s. Since we are going with a 912 design influence theme, and 912s are sort of fat chick 356s, it makes sense to stay with the later refinements. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

The dogleg 901 was also in the 914, and it was perfect for that car. Still one of my favorite car/gearbox combinations. I think the actual gear ratios were different for the 4-cylinder 914 than for the 911 though. They'd probably be right in the ballpark for a Ghia since power wasn't that much more, but you'd have to flip the diff to use a 914 901 in a Ghia. But beyond that, way too much work IMO to fit one in a Ghia anyway. _________________ Currently own:

the obvious porsche style cooling
Porsche 914 seats
Porsche 911 guages and dash, with Karmann Ghia logo
Porsche 917 inspired custom wheels
colours - Body is Porsche Amethyst Pearl, roof Porsche Basalt Black, wheels Porsche Crayon

Looks sharp, way more radical then what we are building.
I am curious as to what size tires you used in the back. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Been chipping away at this one. Since the bodywork is nice I only had to sand at 320 then shoot single stage Porsche Slate Grey over the interior panels. The color is super nice, a deep grey with a touch of green depending on the light. The top sides I will seal to be safe. Hope to do that next week after Christmas.
Body has been scuffed. We had to do some metal work on the spare tire indent area which was haphazardly repaired.

Painted the top side of the panels today. Whoever did the bodywork did a nice job. All I had to do was scuff them up with 320 dry, feather and fill a couple chips, and then seal and paint with three coats.

So you don’t need a fancy-schmacy painting booth and such to paint these? _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0
