No, but it would be nice as it cuts down on dust nibs. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

We cleaned up the original German pans, fixed some holes sealed and undercoated using 3M schutz like the dealer did.
Top side I shot it with epoxy sealer then three coats of black acrylic urethane.
The pans by the way were replaced on the car and the PO chose to use original German ones carefully removed from other Ghias. Given the poor fit and thinness of the available reproductions we decided to stick with these.,the pressings are deeper, the steel is thicker and we feel it will give the car more rigidity than aftermarket,

I’m fortunate enough to have both a swb 912 and recently purchased my dream car, a Karmann Ghia coupe.
The 912 has an overbored engine with a few go faster tweaks and I can honestly say, it’s the biggest ‘insert your own swearword here’ I’ve ever fought with.
Don’t drive it for a couple of weeks and try and get the thing started… grrr.
It looks like you know what you are doing, so I’m sure it won’t phase you, but the 19xxcc in the ghia is a (much lower powered) peach by comparison!
Good luck and thanks for posting. I really need to find time to get back into the garage and get wrenching on my two again. |

Nice 912 and Ghia.
I’ve had a couple 912s, both ‘67s. Wonderful cars. Never had too many issues with starting after sitting for a while, but my 356 with Zeniths will do that and I’ve noticed the same with my 62 Ghia with a Porsche engine and Zeniths. I think the fuel evaporates out of them and so the pump has to refill the reservoir. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I went with a 914 2.8 liter and a 911(915 model) 5 speed transmission.

Nice. Bet it hauls ass. What’s the horsepower on it? We are estimating 100 to 110 based on factory specs plus adding in the big bore pistons, meaning the engine will displace 1.7 vs 1.6. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Went in this morning and spent the day doing some last minute paint prep and then shot the sealer and then three fat coats of Restoration Shop Acrylic Urethane Porsche Slate Gray.
Ignore the hideous yellow stuff. I wasn’t sure if paint would adhere to the sound insulation so we will brush black truck bed liner on it before covering most of it with carpet and interior parts.

That's exactly what my Ghia does.. The solution is to pour a cap full of fuel down the throat of the carb so there's something to get the motor turning soon after the first crank. The float in the carb fills up pretty quickly after that and saves the wear on the starter motor and the battery.

Some Porsche guys install a hand pump, like a squeeze ball, in line to pump fuel into the carbs.
Of course an electric fuel pump would be the best solution if you have 12 volts. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Put the hood and decklid on today. Waiting on a set of new hinges for the doors.

Is the body color a very dark grey, or black? Can look like either in your photos, probably lighting dependant. But that gloss is so nice.
Did you not want to paint the trunk area, spare tire well and inside of the nose the same color? |

It’s Slate Gray, so in some light it’s a deep anthracite gray, in sunlight it lightens up a lot and you can see a touch of green.
The yellow you see is the plastic coating the PO had sprayed on the interior to sound proof it. From what I’ve read it’s used for cars with high end sound systems. We kept it because it will cut down on engine and exterior noise.
I’m concerned that the paint would not stick well or provide an effective surface for glue for the carpet and vinyl so we will use a black brush on product to cover it. Something like truck bed liner. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Nice line up!
The look we are going for color wise is like that 356 cab. Except we are doing a burgundy top instead of black. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

We covered all the yellow plastic sound proofing material with black truck liner today and began reassembling the pan starting with a CB Performance narrowed and adjustable beam with new narrowed torsion bars.
