What is the best oil temp sender for a stock type I engine. I know not all are perfect but what is the best? Are the drain plug ones good? _________________ Stephen

When I had my '69 I used a "T" adapter that screwed into where the oil pressure sending unit went and stuck the temp sender on one end of the "T" and the pressure sender on the other. It worked fine. |

I am using one that replaces the drain plug. I feel that it gets the most oil flow going over it.The one that goes to a T fitting just gets what is trapped in a dead end galley. JT |

JT is right there.
You want to measure the hotest oil you have and that is not it. The threads on that VDO sending unit are 14 x 1.5. You have to fuss with it as the end of the sender can hit the screen on a type 1, but they tell you how to avoid the problem in the instructions I think. How did you resolve that JT? |

A cylinder head temperature sender would probably be a better choice for an instrument. You need at least one thermocouple looped under the #3 sparkplug. One of these days I will install the kit, and it will be a dual CHT gauge with a switch for each bank so I can read all four holes individually. You can roast a head before your oil temp ever does anything. |

i am more familiar with installing aguges on type IV engines than on type 1, but i believe on a type 1 the drain plug senders will give a good reading. on a type IV the porsche sender which fits in the small sump plate works very well unless you have a hydraulic lifter engine case. in hydro engine cases the sump plate senders read very very slowly due to a difference in the case design in the sump plate area. VDO makes a kit with instructions for drilling the hole in the sump plate, which also works well, but again not as well on hydraulic cases as on solid lifter cases.
i disagree with steponme about not needing oil temperature because you have CHT. oil temp and CHT are almost completely independent of each other in terms of how they are triggered. CHT is load dependent and oil temp is RPM dependent. you can have a healthy CHT reading and oil temps can be through the roof, oil temp may be perfect and CHT pegged. on an older vehicle, epecially a camper, there really isn't a choice between one or the other, you should have both. gauges are not perfect, but they can absolutley save your engine if they are used correctly. _________________ SL |

never said it's not needed, scott, but i would choose the CHT over the oil temp if i had to.
of course you should get both. |
