If you are running straight cuts I would run these CB ones (not the Pro Series) or the Magnum which I know RLR had them at one point

Check the gear backlash at 4 different points on the can gear 90 degrees apart when doing mock up/assembly. |

Curious.
Why don't you recommend the Pro series cam gear set?
I have a set and they seem to work as advertised.
I have heard that the Magnum straight cut gears are the quietest of them all. _________________ I have learned over the years.

At full throttle. The roar of the 45 Dells are louder than the cam gears!
But I get the idea. I have a set of EMPI straight cuts that are kinda quiet.
But I prefer the "racer spacer" crank timing gear, compared to the VW spacer ring. _________________ I have learned over the years.

My observation is that the quality control on the pro series is all over the place. Not concentric with the center of the cam has been the issue several times I am aware of. That'll make it loud for sure _________________ modok wrote:

I actually really love the way that sounds...A loud set of cam gears just sounds like a hopped up VW to me.
Put in the order for pro series gears today, I will be sure to check lash in multiple places and do what I can to check concentricity out of the box.
Just want to get rid of the clattering of this gear set _________________ Dennis - 1973 Super Beetle ('16-'21)

I Like to use OG mag gears; I can get the size I need and with using double copper face thrust cam brgs the setup does not wear out with any street spring. I keep re-using the NLA copper thrust brgs as they don't wear out. I also like using the 36hp/356/912 gears if I can find the size I need without it costing an arm and leg.
All that racket on Ricks car I could never live with. I would love for someone to engineer a reasonably priced intake air box to reduce the intake noise of the VW dual carb setup. The worst intake noise I have ever had on all the engines I built was with IDA's.
I guess I just don't like noise and would be embarrassed if other hear my engines sounding like that. I guess I take a lot of pride in my engine building.
If I were to build a trailered Drag car, I would use straight cuts. |

Just admit that you’re getting old Dan😂, I’m joking so don’t get mad
Most straight cut gears aren’t that loud and actually the Pro Series are the only ones I’ve had that are.
Running an A-1 race muffler wouldn’t be quiet on any engine |

Yes I am getting old but I have always liked quiet but potent engines. I sure have to see doctors more than I care for. I do like a good sounding exhaust and the A1 would not be my choice. |
