This is a Dutch video, but a cool syncro promo video. Does anyone know what is going on here, At 16:30 the decoupler engages while the mechanic plays with the gear shifter. Also at 15:30, he is tightening something at the front diff. Curious about that as well. Is there an english version of this video that anyone knows about

Super interesting! Originally the syncro transmission was designed to automatically couple into 4wd when you shifted into L/G gear. I believe you had to manually decouple it to get back into 2wd, even if you shifted out of L/G. There's drawings of everything in the Syncro Transmission Rebuild workshop manual. Pretty cool to get a view of what it looked like, even if it's fairly obscured.

I was right, you decouple out of 4wd with a bowden cable.

VW was originally going to offer the syncro in AWD & 4WD variants. This automatic coupling is presumably from the 4WD option VW never ended up making. You can see the different front pinion gears for each AWD Viscous Coupling (11) and 4WD "Solid shaft"(12).

Syncroandestroy, be careful here! There has been an ongoing battle that the factory viscous models are all "4WD" and always transmit power to the fronts despite the need for the F/R shafts to spin at different speeds to transmit power to the front axle!!

Hee, hee, hee.........runs for the hills...!!!!

If you click on the gear icon on the video you can set it so it subtitles it in English, it wont be perfect but should help you get the gist of what is being said.

That's back when you could buy a replacement transmission off the shelf for about $500. Very Happy

Good ole 20/20 hindsight. Even back in 2006 when I got mine I could have bought a low mileage spare for $500. Brick wall

One of my very first post here on the Samba back in '06 was asking about the tow rating. Wink

my limited dutch:

versnellinsbak= transmission.

versnellininterlekke = transmission interlock

aandrijflijn =powertrain

versnelling=gear

from what it sounds like to me is they are going over special tools and their application to the various parts of the drive train. the orange airline 'interlekkingkabel' is mentioned too.

groet.

Yeah they are loading a couple horses into a trailer attached to the van. How much do horses weigh, 3/4ton?
But mountain passes in Netherlands are about 2 meters (to get over a levee.) Wink

2006 is when I had Weddle build the 6,17 r/p with front diff. lock for my TDI conversion.

At the time I seriously considered selling my original tranny/front diff. to save money. Rolling Eyes

Am I ever glad I didn't Very Happy with less than 150 k miles of wbx and AAZ it is in pristine condition.

Consider getting the spare rebuilt now while GT gears and shafts are available. And bearings. And while reputable (Syncro) builders are still around. Syncro requires a specialist.
They could all retire in a few years.

Click the gear, then click subtitles, auto translate should be an option, then select english

Sometimes the auto translate doesn't show up. if it doesn't try turning on closed captions (CC) to the left of the gear (settings). then try again.

If it still doesn't work just select dutch from the subtitles menu, then click the back arrow, and try again, and translate should be an option

Hmmm....still doesn't work for me. Maybe because I'm in Canada, or using Safari?
I can get the subtitles in Dutch, but auto-translate to english just makes the subtitles disappear. Have tried all your suggestions.

Oh well, thanks anyway!
