|

I've stumbled upon a low miles 1974 thing that is for sale.
Stock
Original
Low miles
Minor rust.
Yellow - original and presentable
Good top
ok interior
good title/registration
What should I look for?
VIN is c1030e010 - is an early production number? (not that it matters really) _________________ Peter Gariepy

That is not the VIN #...It would be something like the following
184xxxxxxx
The 4 denotes the year 1974. The VIN should be on a metal plate
under the front trunk, or on the sticker on the driver's vertical panel
between the doors, and on the chassis near the panel hiding the
shift coupler. Hope this helps. _________________ 74 Thing 1600DP

Spare tire? Windows?
Looks like the wrong exhaust. What engine is in it?
Have you tried the windscreen wipers?
How does it look underneath, rust wise? |

wow, that "thing" is in good shape
I'm not a Thing guy but I know they do have a good following.
motor, miles, .... are you really going to keep it bone stock?
the huge issue is RUST, crawl all over it, under over, look in every nook and cranny
and no accidents

Spare tire? NONE
Windows? Including. Original in original bag. A little smoked.
Looks like the wrong exhaust. What engine is in it? Correct engine, wrong exhaust.
Keep it stock: yes
Have you tried the windscreen wipers? NO
How does it look underneath, rust wise? Surface rust overall. Some rust thru base of the drivers side rear door but mostly isolated. _________________ Peter Gariepy

Some rust through below drivers side rear door. But not bad.

Have you looked at the sticky "what to look for when buying a Thing?" It is just above your post... _________________ "Someday the world is gonna be populated by nothing but Volkswagens'" Corporal Klairvoy |

X2 what Joe said. A pic of the engine bay would help. _________________ Thanx, DLT

Not much $. Just pull the ignition lock and have a new key made from the code stamped on the side. There are a couple of different people on here that can cut a key from code. Just search the classifieds for their contact info.
Is the title missing too? If so, I'd probably just walk away from the deal. _________________ '74 Thing

Since the speedometer will not read above 99,999 miles, if your is reading 20,000 miles it is very likely to be 120,000 miles or even 220,000 miles. A seller through ignorance or grift will always tell you its a low mileage car. |
