Hi all! So when I bought my Syncro, the PO had given me a tachometer to install into the Syncro. Since I’m new to the diesel Syncro world. How do I hook one of these up? The tach is out of a vanagon. I don’t know I if it’s out of a 2nd gas or a diesel(if diesels ever had them). When we traveled last year in the van, I quickly realized how important having a tach is (for me) over having a slow working clock. Thanks all! |

Go to the Vanagon forum home screen and type "diesel tach*" into the search field and check the little box for searching "Title only". Reading the threads that are shown as a result will answer all of your questions.

Long story short is that there's a tach wire that connects to the alternator. I ran around for MONTHS reading different posts and forums. Hit me up directly if you need more info. _________________ Chris

Remember when they were no forums? Nothing was getting done, or you had to search harder
Joke aside, post a pic of your tach, the red zone will tell you if it's a gasser or a diesel model assuming nobody swapped the faceplate, unlikely.
If it's a gasser, the circuit board needs to be modified, bc it runs off the negative side of the coil, the diesel one runs off the W output of the alternator.
If you don't have an alternator with the W output, you can add one taping in any of the phases of the alternator.
You can also calibrate the tach with the little potentiometer screw in the back should you have a non original pulley set up.
For details, I'll let you do your homework a bit, it's a good skill to have _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

You might also have a TDI installed and may be able to get the rpm signal directly from the ECU. That’s what I’m doing.
I’ve seen the threads regarding modifying the gasser tach and even with the detailed how too’s soldering boards and changing resistors, transistors etc is not in my comfort zone. Basically because I don’t know what I am doing.
The downside is my tach is only accurate at around 3000 rpm. That’s where it is adjusted to. _________________ ☮️ |

Not embarrassed at all... I'll be the first to admit I'm a garage / driveway tinkerer. When I was running around trying to figure out my tach not working, most were saying get the RPM's off the W post on the alternator. Well, most modern alternators that I've touched do not have a W post! So, then there were snarky posts, such as yours, saying it's just so easy. Well, for me, it took some running around, trial and error, then finally figuring it out for myself. _________________ Chris

Since it looks like you have a JX, (mechanical IDI), you'll need to look into the alternator tach output and make sure the pulley size is correct on it. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

Sorry to drag this up.
Pulled this from a van in the junkyard. Is this the diesel cluster/tach that is needed to run off the alternator? |

That photo appears to be a 1984 model year instrument cluster.
That would make it for a 1.9 gas waterboxer Vanagon.
1984 Wolfsburg Edition models were the first Vanagons to come with tachs as standard.
