Jay Leno used them and liked them well enough to do a small feature in one of his restoration blog videos. Skip to 14:10 if you want to watch the segment on Just Dashes:

Yes, I know someone that sent in a type 3 dash. It looks ok. They can't match the grain. I have had a problem uploading pics lately, sorry. It was $750 10 years ago not sure their rate now. If you have a car worth of a perfect dash, I'd hunt for good used _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

They quoted my 1200-1300 for my dash with a 12 week backlog in December. I decided to say no. |

I saw one some years ago. Not only can they not match the grain, they can't match the speaker holes, either. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I had thought that, yet the pics I have from a friends car has holes. I'll try again, I was on my work computer yesterday and they could have turned on some blocking stuff, yet I was getting an uploaded message on the galley page... _________________ Stop dead photo links! yeah I don't know if it's photucket encoding or what, so I'm sorry but you're going to have to have the photobucket extension fix plugin most likely. I was incorrect, this was $500 back in the day. Looking at the back side I'd bet they are just filling the cracks with foam, sanding it down, and then heating and vacuum sealing with a vinyl wrap. If you can get big enough pieces of what Michael used on his early notchback arm rests (here https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...p;start=65) , I think it would look better. For the $1200 quote you could certanly give it a shot. Or buy one of the hard plastic ones and wrap it? Or search for NOS
If you do go the just dashes route you will want your arm rests to match right? That won't be cheap

I honestly think its not bad - except.
If they made it more crisp and detailed like the og one and lost the puffy soft look it would be a better sell and an easier pill to swallow.

I was thinking the same thing. First thing I noticed was the gauge wraps were not as sharp. I agree. They could make it more of a match. Their workmanship is there. Maybe they have never seen what a good OG one really looks like...
I'd pay $500 for that dash, but not $1200. I sent them an RFQ, we'll see. _________________ '64 1500 S

I have issues with the look of the restored dash (plumpish) vs OG, that said. This is more of a chemistry question on NOS vs Restoration dash.
An NOS dash is aged petro-chemical plastic. I would expect and predict it to be far more susceptible to cracking, splitting and general decomposition within months of being placed in a car. UV damage just being one vector. While a restored dash would hopefully utilizing some of the newer foam and vinyl formulas for the material. I would expect the new materials better compensate for cracking, splitting, decomposition and be delayed or even protect from this eventuality.
I may not have the skill, but I would rebuild/restore before using an NOS dash. I have seen an OEM Type 141 dash split and crack within one year post install. _________________ Ossipon

First - having Just Dashes even give you the time of day and offer what they do is a blessing - better than nothing for sure. Their restoration process is what makes the dash look that way. Watch a youtube on it to see. Their process will never yield a look like stock dashes. The look of a restored dahs by them makes me think of a 240 Z dash every time.
If you find an NOS dash, then hurry and get lotto tickets as well. you will win. Im sure there has been an NOS one out there this late in the game, but most are just nice old ones that came from a damp dark climate car that rotted away or crashed long ago. Installing a nice dash also means you need to care for it. You will want to as you will feel privileged you have one and obligated to care for it since it will cost a small fortune.

My Dad had a tool something similar to this when he was doing leather
https://www.amazon.com/Kllsmdesign-Stainless-Leath...B08PBQLDBL
The difference between the Amazon offering and my Dad's was the ability to change pin size and it allowed double row. I bet they used something similar.
But, it would still take time and a form to follow. _________________ Ossipon

Not to derail, but what do you recommend for caring for a dash? |

No more Armor-All for me!
I use 303 Aerospace now. It seemed the best a few years ago. Maybe there is better stuff now.
What are you trying to protect it from?:
- Drying out: a good protectant, applied before it looks like it needs it.
- UV: protectant plus even a cheap cardboard sunshade is worth it. I use the bubble-wrap mylar reflective ones.
- Temperatures: cycling from hot to cold means expansion and contraction, and that movement puts cracks at stress points. Shades, and cracking windows help with heat. Not much you can do for cold other than a garage! |
