I've done some exhaustive searching and FAQ reading and either I suck at it or my specific topic hasn't been widely covered. Either way, what I'm looking for is info on what you folks are running on your Type 1 wheels if you got those. When I bought my car, it had the stock 185 tires. I then lowered it and went with 195/50's (7.7"w) and those worked. Then I raised the car back up to the height it was when I bought it, presumably stock height? Rough roads. Problems for me arose years later when I got new tires and went with these 195/65s (7.7"w) - thinking they would fit. I was educated by fellow Samba members that I was in fact rolling on beetle wheels all this time, which was news to me. I'm kinda set on selling the tires and just keeping these wheels because getting new wheels is a hassle in Alaska. I figure there are others out there running beetle wheels, and I'd like to know what tires you're running, just to know what my possibilities are. I'd like a bigger sidewall to absorb bumps better and ride smoother, looking at possibly getting 175/65's (6.9"w)

Here are the ill fitting 195/65s

Those are 5.5" wide. Try some 4.5"

Stock 165SR15’s might fit. Never had a set of beetle wheels to try.

You can run the 195/65 with the proper VW wheels.
First is to determine what wheels you have and there offset.
You stated that they are Type 1. Look at the face of the bolt pattern to see wheel size & ET markings.

This link has good examples:

Deep dish wheels don't fit well on lowered Type 3's.
Flat faced 5.5" 2.0 liter Fuchs with ET40 fit fine.
I have 205x15 in the back now on 5.5" Mobelwagen wheels with ET35.

I've been too busy to follow up, but I finally went out and checked my wheels again to try to locate any identifiers. There isn't anything stamped on the outside of the wheel, but there are letters stamped on the inside, right near the bolts. Each one is a different letter "D M F G". So that's weird. I'm in Alaska so its a headache to get stuff like wheels. haha I should make that my signature.
I got time to figure this thing out, winters not over for another 3 months...
