Based on your own personal ownership, what was your best stock engine/engines ever and why? Modified doesn't count. I have three:

1) AMC 3.8L/4.0L straight six. Great gas mileage & good power.
2) Chevrolet 427/454. Tremendous power & torque.
3) Ford 300 CID straight six. Slow but not effected by load. 20 mpg highway

Good engine. I never had the 225 but I did have a couple of 170s. My brother had a 225 in a full size Fury. He got 25 mpg on the highway all the time.

Nissan (Datsun) L-16, German design improved by the Japanese, absolutely bulletproof and good power.

Honda EC 1.5, Canadian non smog version of the 75-79 CVCC, great power and almost as tough as the Nissan.

- 1600cc Bug, various versions, either when new, or properly rebuilt and maintained. No-brainer here, but it had to be said!
- Plymouth slant six
- 2000-2010ish Toyota FE 1500 L4 engine, used in Corollas and the ICE basis for the Prius hybrid. Bulletproof.

Most people don’t know the differences.

One of the best stock engines in a car that I abused. The Mazda 12A rotary (1982). Not as good as the 13B (1985 on). Still took abuse from this high school kid. That engine was robust. But only good for 100,000 miles of neglect. Plus in 1980s the RX-7 was a panty dropper cruising the strip, gut, miracle mile, or Avenue. Loved the Wankel in the RX-7 and the car 😉

Had to be VW 1200 engine 1960 and before. Seemingly indestructible required minimum care.

I haven't had that many cars for all that long, the longest running engine I had that I drove daily was a 2012 ford focus I owned from new I just gave to my mom. 135k on the engine and still ran perfectly, no oil burning, just changed the oil religiously.

So far, the Beetle's 1600dp is good and reliable, though a bit loud!

Eh, they are good, wife’s car has 335,000 on it, but I’ll vote for the 1.9 pre-PD TDIs… ALH, AHU, AAZ.

My best stock engine is the current 1500 engine for my 1969 Beetle, with 44,000 miles on it. It is currently being restored/rebuilt to 1641, but look stock. This is a pic of it when I pulled it a few weeks ago.

My other best stock engine is the 5.7L in my 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax. 380 HP gets the job done, and it has been a very reliable vehicle.

My current 2002 Tahoe 5.3 with 218,000 miles. Lots of power and no issues.
