howdy pardners, van (bone stock 1.9, 85 manual transmission) has a noise happening that to me sounds to me like a wind up, almost like a toy race car. speed of sound increases with rev, decreases with decel. volume remains constant. it has been present for a while now and i've got no idea what it is. wondering if it's the alternator, a gifted remanned Bosch of unknown origins, which swapped in for a dead aftermarket for a a while back.
any thoughts or ideas are appreciated
please excuse the tired a** engine and even more tired lifters.

It sounds like a belt may be slipping... have you checked tensions? _________________ Chris

Why don't you open up the engine compartment and make the video there?! |
Yes, do that.
Sounds like maybe a bearing in one of the accessories is starting to go.
You can isolate the sound by using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope; put the metal end on the accessory (say alternator) with the plastic end to your ear. When you find it, you'll know.
Also look for wobbly pulleys with the engine running, though it may not be far enough gone for that.
I'm gonna go ahead and bet one of the bearings inside the alternator. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

Engine bay was closed because I was in a parking lot when I remembered to take the video.
I’m also leaning toward bearings in alternator as this first became noticeable sometime after swapping it.
Did the stethoscope job a while back and it was not possible to locate an origin point in engine bay. At that time I didn’t check the alt. Thanks for the reminder
Is it possible to repair alternator bearing or are they kaput when they are kaput? _________________ so many roads i know

You might be able to find a starter/alternator rebuilder shop in your area. Those kind of repair shops are becoming harder to find these days. If you find one they should be able to replace the bearings on the shaft.
Or...you can get a replacement alternator from a FLAPS with a lifetime replacement warranty. _________________ 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia "Von Westy"
