|
|
Rebuilding a early 60's 40HP case. (round hole oil filler) It was Align Bored at some time and is still good. (Has a Rimco stamp)
Case saddle measures 2.567". (across flats)
Old Bearing OD measures 2.569".
Case shows little to no wear. (Can't feel anything in the saddle from the main bearings)
This seams to be a .010" case. Do not see bearings for these for sale anywhere.
- Does this seem right?
- Do they still make them (I tried to search but just get .010" crank info)
I have a set of new .020" bearings (111-198-477T) and they do not fit. Not even close. They measure 2.578"
Case really does not need to be bored again. I could easy go up to .020" but why if i can get .010? bearings somewhere?
What i need is a .010/.030 set. The old bearings have no part number on them to go off of. _________________ 1964 Original Owner build Thread. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=702135&highlight=

I know shops where I live found it to be easier and cheaper many times to Machine a case and bearings together in whatever size made it work.
They'd take a 2nd oversize off the shelf and put it on the mill and just machine it to fit whatever the case was. Occasionally only the thrust had any wear so they'd run the bore through the thrust just a couple thou* and mill the bearing to fit.
Especially in the 90's on something like a 40hp that was assumed likely to never be rebuilt again when 1600's were cheap and plentiful.
Just a guess / idea to what you may be dealing with. _________________

0.25 over bearings did exist.
Try mofoco or rimco or maybe they have some. |

RIMCO was around for a very long time before Ed sold it about 2010. BugCity https://bugcity.com/shop/shop.lasso?pquery=main+bearings has some of the unusual .25mm (.010") over main bearings but you need to know the thrust cut and crankshaft size too. If it is .25mm/Std/Std then I did not see that. It says on their page that they were from a company in Austria and that VW never made that size cut. Here is a link to a chart of the bearings that were available sizes on VW engines with the part numbers. You will see that .25mm over on the bore was not available. https://dunebuggywarehouse.com/blogs/news/vw-type-...gy-engines _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Once upon a time, there were repair bearings that were made in between the cuts. You have 0 and .5 now and at one time 0.25 existed.
I have the size you need but not in repair bearings.
I have a chart here on top of the page. Since you are using a 3rd cut crank you will find a lot of bearings. Not many people venture out that far.

Ok, not sure why tho
It's a lot easier to trim the bearing than it is to line bore the case. |

That is what I did for my type 4 engine. I just bought the correct crank and case size and the closest available thrust then chucked it up in my lathe and trimmed it to fit. Why cut the case if it doesn't need it? _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. I'd save the case as much as possible. Cut the bearing before you cut the case. _________________ www.vwnos.com

I am the odd ball. I would look for a good standard crank and cut the case to the first standard oversize. Two problems solved. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Thank you Guys. I thought i was going nuts re-checking that measurement and searching around.
In inches i need .010/.030/???. (Case/Crank/Thrust) I need to check my thrust but think it is std. |
I have second and fourth cut on the crank but not third. I'm going to keep looking to see if I can find what you need. _________________ www.vwnos.com

Thank you. Did not mean to poke the bear there.
Any pictures of how you would cut the split bearing OD? I was told you put in on a mantral and wiring it closed using the oil slot but that seems like a fantastic way to ace out the bearing. To me i would make a mandral with side guides and them maybe it would work. The rest are pretty straight forward. I guess i need a visual on how to do the split bearing. _________________ 1964 Original Owner build Thread. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=702135&highlight=

After many PM's and chasing down leads no joy. I did find .010/.030/.010 bearings but my case is not cut for thrust.

You said you found bearings you wanted except for being .010 under thrust , so, just widen the thrust of the #1 bearing.
30-50% of vw engine builders do it this way every time. It should be no big deal to find somebody to do it, or learn how yourself.
Even the 7x10 harbor freight mini lathe is strong enough to handle this job IF you know how. |

You want a picture of how to mount the thrust bearing on a lathe?
ok sure, I'll get a picture of that setup for you.
I am not aware of how to modify a split bearing to a .010 smaller OD.
Maybe possible, maybe not.
Never been asked to try it. |

I set them up on my mini lathe and cut them to size.

No. Sorry for not being clear. I was trying to get my head around how you would take a standard set of bearings (STD/.030/STD) and cut the OD's down by .010". To do that you have to cut all four Bearing OD and the split one would be interesting.

Thanks for the visit today. I now see how to cut the trust using the tool and how to cut the bearing thrust on the lathe. Makes total sense how using a set of .010"/.030"/.010" Low Mileage rebuild bearings and cutting the thrust would work without cutting the saddle more. Thank you. If only i could find some STD thrust units.
Oh Wait...
That looks like the hot ticket. Standard Thrust right? .010"/.030/SDT? Makes life even easier. _________________ 1964 Original Owner build Thread. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=702135&highlight=
