I've run multiple VW turbo-diesel engines in Vanagons (including 1.6TD, 1.9AAZ, 1Z, AHU, and ALH) without any aux coolant pump/sensor and have never had any coolant issues as a result. As far as why VW added it to the JX, you would need to ask VW. While you're at it, find out why they added the BOV to the intake manifold...

I don't like engine bay clutter and so did not implement it in my ALH.

Letting a diesel idle a minute or two after a hard run is just good diesel hygiene anyways.

I added an override switch to the radiator fan instead. A minute of idle with fan on low drops coolant temps by a lot.

All engines from AAZ on don't get that hot in vans anyways...

The 1,6td on the other hand... Twisted Evil

In 2014, from Rockford, Illinois, enroute to Alaska, pulling a popup camper, the cooling system in my 84 tin-top with an ALH lost pressure. The hard pipe come loose from the back of the gauge at the dash. Yeah, I do have such a gauge.

So, rather than try to make a repair, I drove on watching the temp gauges to make sure the engine didn't over-heat. After 100s of miles at highway speeds and running the AC, I come to the conclusion everything was going to be just fine.

We completed the entire trip with no issues.

I agree in some circumstances, the engine should be allowed to idle for a couple of minutes so that the Turbo cools down. The temp drop is rather fast based on what I've observed on the EGT gauge.

It won't hurt for sure. It only runs when engine is off.
