I'm converting my '59 36hp engine from 6 to 12 volts, and have a 38 amp 90mm 12 volt 356/912 generator lined up. I just have to source a backing plate and fan. Which fan and backing plate should I use - the matching 356/912 one or will a vw 36hp backing plate and fan work?

Thank you

Ted

I used 36hp parts and the 90mm generator was a direct bolt in.

Awesome thank you esde. This should save me from buying the wrong parts.

Are the 36 hp and 356 different?

That is what I was wondering. I wanted to play it safe and ask which one fits for sure. From what esde said it does. If a 356/912 backing plate is the same, then I can buy either.

Oops Embarassed I need to ask which pulley will I want to use with the new to me but still old 90mm 12 volt generator?

Would this still use the OG 36hp 6 volt generator pulley, or do I need the later model, larger diameter one?

Here are the choices:

36hp 6volt pulley:

13-1600 12 volt pulley:

I run the stock 36hp pulley. The later pulley is larger and would require a longer belt. Your fan would be spinning slightly slower.

Thanks petrol, this is what I will also do - run the 36hp pulley which I already have.
