on a 1600S 1954 witch rear tin go? with hole or not ?

I wish I could help, but I do not understand the question. A 1600S was never installed in a 1954, so nothing you do is going to be standard.

Which "hole" are you asking about? If crank hole w/ spotwelded shut cover then yes, If asking about carb pre-heat horn holes then no.

Yes, a "55 would use a 3-pc case heater box with no pre-heat provisions, just a smooth side. Hard to find but easier than a 2-pc case heater box.

With flap, I have seen heater boxes without flaps but believe they are from industrial motors.

rear tin - no hole - no carburator pre-heat tube - simple heather box with one flap - no thermostat
