I'm currently having a to-and-fro on another forum about whether schwimmwagens were used in north africa at all. some say yes, rommel requested them and that their smooth undersides were good in the sandy terrain
I say they were not, or maybe one or two for evaluation at most, especially as I've never seen a photo of one...although I found this today
so does anybody know the answer? _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut

There aren't any photos of schwimmers in Afrika, yet there are thousands of pics of kubels.
Your photo could be from anywhere in southern Europe. Sicily, Italy, Greece, Crete.
The license number on the car in your pic is quite high, indicating this is a late war car. Certainly made in 1944. Since the Germans were done in Tunisia in early 43, that car couldn't have been in Afrika. _________________

thanks, I knew the licence number was high but have mislaid my info on wartime numbering so wasn't sure. unfortunately a lot of people on facebook think palm trees mean afrika korps and photos of 2nd SS div in southern france keep popping up 'as proof'. I think it's a losing battle to uphold the facts when there is so much misinformation everywhere all the time.
