I've usually had pretty good luck with 1 gal (~4L). It doesn't hurt to have extra. If you are using a catalyzed paint, of course the catalyst will increase the volume.
If you are using a darker color, sometimes you can have the paint shops tint the primer for you, for better color coverage over the primer.
