I posted regarding this about a year ago but have just now gotten the time and parts to have a go at it. I'm rebuilding a 68 Baja Bug here in Los Barriles Baja Mexico and am closing in on finishing it. It will be used on the dirt roads and beach, no hi -peed off-road driving. I'm currently working to correct the front suspension and need some guidance. The car rode very rough on the front due to the "cut and weld" that was done to lift the vehicle. My plan is to install lifted spindles and beam adjusters. When I removed the beam yesterday, I was surprised to find the "cut and weld" was performed ONLY on the bottom tube of the beam...the top tube is untouched. I will be installing the adjusters in their center position so I have both up and down adjustment possible. The new spindles have a 3" lift. The rear has a swing axle which has been adjusted to lift the car to what I believe is a maximum ride height which will still have adequate travel. Here are my questions:

1. Can I assume that the stock position of the bung on the bottom tube is the same as the top tube(stock)? In other words, are the bungs clocked equally on the top and bottom tubes when stock. I have no other stock beams to reference.

2. Is my plan to install the adjusters centered to stock the proper way to go?

3. Was doing a "cut and weld on the bottom tube only a common practice? I can see that it could be done without removing the beam from the vehicle.

4. What shocks would you recommend for my application. I want a soft shock but something affordable with great durability. Since I need to have them shipped to Mexico, something I can get on Amazon easily would be best.

Thanks for your input!

From what I’ve seen, they are clocked the same
For what you describe with a stock beam adjustment, stock shocks should be what you’re looking for.
I love the paint and color you’ve done. Looks great.

Thanks Mike! I cut and welded the adjusters on the beams this afternoon and after a little paint tomorrow morning, I should have it reassembled by the end of the weekend. Thanks for your reply!

The guy that owns the Electrical/ plumbing construction store on HWY1 at KM111 is an avid off-roader with a fab shop in the back of the property.

He might have some guys that can help out if you are ever in a pinch or want to order some parts here and there.

My family used to own the Agave Hotel at KM108

Yes, that’s Armando Molina’s place they are more into Baja race trucks than anything Volkswagen. I’m able to source parts from two stores in LePage and two stores in Cabo. If I can’t find them here I can have them sent down… It takes three or four weeks and an additional 35% for shipping and taxes. my next phase of this project is to build a healthy motor for it. The one I have is a bit long in the tooth.

Yeah, that's him.

He was racing class 1, and rebuilding a couple class 12 cars when I visited his shop last. He had some guys that had some street Baja's that worked for him, just figured they would maybe be of some fab help if they were still around for you.

We used to bring parts for him down from the states.
