Do I need this cooler? I'm planning to change the rear of this cage and it will be in the way.
Thanks! _________________ 1977 Bay 2.0 FI

The setup you have required the stock oil cooler to be removed. So you need to keep the one you have or put the stock cooler back in. _________________ Glenn

I definitely understand that and figured that. I wouldn't mind reusing it. Would the original style work well enough for this? This buggy probably won't see sand. My main use will be on 10 acres where I live and eventually a fishing buggy in the mountains. _________________ 1977 Bay 2.0 FI

The stock setup was good enough for a Beetle, your rail is a lot lighter, so i can't imagine it would be a problem. _________________ Glenn

Okay! I have a few original doghouses laying around that I could use. If I can make this one work with my new configuration, I will. Otherwise, Ill change it. Thanks! _________________ 1977 Bay 2.0 FI

You're existing shroud is a non-doghouse, so you'll need to change the shroud and fan. _________________ Glenn

Yup. I’ve got a couple stock ones with the oil cooler parts. _________________ 1977 Bay 2.0 FI

I plan to move and re-plumb this one for now. But, if it doesn’t work out, I’ll swap back to stock. _________________ 1977 Bay 2.0 FI

In my humble opinion the best cooling possible is done with a factory dog house setup on a dual relief case.
If I was inclined to run a external cooler i would mount it low, and tie in from a full flow setup.
Best of luck on your build |

I like the idea of stock cooling with the addition of a screw on filter. _________________ 1977 Bay 2.0 FI

^^^And that is exactly what I have.^^^ You would have to be doing some pretty serious high speed racing to need that cooler! _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. Driving in third gear in this thing is almost terrifying. So I won't be racing anytime soon! _________________ 1977 Bay 2.0 FI

If you remove that cooler....what are you gonna do for an oil filter?
Ain't no way that I'd run the sand w/o a filter.
There isn't anything wrong w/the way that is mounted. If you have to move it, you might be able to mount it below your gas tank. If you do that, move the oil filter so it catches some air also. The big thing is, they have to catch a breeze.
If you change to a dog-house, you should get rid of that Power-Pulley....unless it doesn't get hot where you are at. |

Good catch on the filter! It's only filtering on a fully warmed up engine, not on cold start up. Something to think about. _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit.
