As per Wikipedia…
“The name Wiedergänger refers to different zombie or ghost phenomena from different cultural areas. The word means "one who walks again" in German. The core of the wiedergänger myth is the concept of the deceased, who—often in the form of a physical phenomenon—return to the world of the living.”
Or the more contemporary translation, “The Revenant”.
This 1964 thirteen window Deluxe was wrecked in 1974 & parked in a field, that field became a forest, and this beast was forgotten until a fellow VW enthusiast bought it & placed an ad for it here. I went to look at it, made an offer, & became the lucky sucker… I mean new owner.
By now, I’m sure that many of y’all have tripped across a thread or two of mine, but if you have not, I don’t care about originality, perfection, or the “correct this or that”. My focus is to resurrect my projects, make them structurally, and mechanically, sound & then return them to service. Then, I will drive the snot out of them.
Here’s the beast as found.
Delivered over the weekend, my first task was to make it roll again. The PO managed to break the front wheels loose, but the rears were seized solid. I removed the wheel & castle nut, and installed a drum puller.
And finally extracted the left rear drum.
Yeah, that’s ugly.

Wolfgang International makes a nice transaxle mid mount that you should look into if you drive this thing like you drove the Ghiapet. At very least it is a good reference for something you build yourself. |

Thanks, I’m sure this thing will haunt me in the long run.

Thanks for that. While I don’t plan on beating this to that extent (I do currently have “The Wildebeest”), Im sure that there will be some off road adventures.
Next up was to repeat the process on the passenger side…
You can see where the seller beat the drum in an attempt to break the shoes free.
I even tried to shock the shoes with a drift through the lug bolt holes.
As you can see, this approach does damage the adjusters, retaining spring caps, and the spreader bar, so I wouldn’t suggest this unless absolutely necessary.
Fortunately, upon freeing the drums, my concerns about the transmission and reduction boxes being seized from almost 50 years of sitting were allayed since the axles turned freely while spinning the input shaft.
While I sorta appreciate the seller’s efforts to make it a roller, he stuffed the galled lug bolts back in & further damaged the threads in the drums.
So I chased each hole with a tap.
And we’ll, speaking of not caring about originality, I tossed a set of wheels from a past Thing project on it.
I’m kinda diggin the difference in offset.
However, the passenger rear fender arch interfered due to being caved in, so I coaxed it out with a block of wood.
With the rear brakes gutted, it should be easy to move…. Nope. I guess this explains that.
With a bit of leverage…
I persuaded it back into a more acceptable shape.

Speaking of haunting, or maybe just Hantavirus (and Baylisascarus), welcome to my self imposed Hell.
For some strange reason, I actually shot the seat clamps with penetrating oil.
After removing the seat, and the mat, I finally got to assess the cargo floor, or what’s left of. I really hope that there wasn’t anything needed in all the crap on the mat, because I just rolled it up & emptied it into a trash can.
That carpet disintegrated into clumps of fibrous dust with each attempt of removing it.
So I can now see the ground, I mean floor.

Nope, any true VW enthusiast has been there & has the odiferous emanations of rodent feces permanently etched into their memory. I dare say that a mere whiff of it takes you back to a certain project.

I would have loved to have done this, but it’s here now. After shoveling out the larger stuff, I did flush the rest out with some water.
Oddly, this stuff is so old, it really doesn’t have a scent, kinda just a faint, sweetish, moldy tobacco smell.
Anyway, let’s rip into this & see what we’re dealing with.

By all outright appearances, the frame rails seem to be solid. But the outriggers tend to collect stuff & rot the frame behind them out. So… there’s only one way to find out.
Hey y’all… WATCH THIS!
I am pleasantly surprised that it’s still solid.

My intentions of lopping the center cross members out was negated by the necessity to disconnect all of the cables & linkages running through the tubes.
So I attempted to start with the parking brake cables, which led me to just deal with removing the seats & cleaning the decades of accumulated crap (literally)
Hey! I found the church key…
Rather appropriately, right next to the remains of a pocket Bible.
With all of the major chunks of crap, upholstery shreds, & rust removed, I finally accessed the nuts on the parking brake cable.
Since the bottom fell out of the sky, this was the end of today’s endeavors. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

My task for today was to TRY to remove the cables & shift rod, but that was thwarted by a seized bolt on the front joint of the shift rod. So I soaked it with PBlaster & walked away.
In an attempt to keep some rain out of the hulk, I slipped the front vent wing in. However, the rivet was bad & the window fell out when I closed the door. Not having a 3mm bolt, I grabbed an old spark plug, broke the ceramic off & made an impromptu nut & bolt.
It’ll do fo now.
The next thing that I did was to scrape off & wire brush the wheel tub to see how salvageable it was.
There are a few holes that will need to be addressed, but I slathered some Ospho on it to preserve what I had.

That’s the plan…
Speaking of which…
It’s like Christmas all over again. And the you realize someone slipped you the cheaper ripoff version of it.
And it’s already been out of the package & played with.
Of course it had to be the part that was actually going to be seen.
Oh well, a little hammer & dolly work, and a couple of light passes through the English wheel…

Eh, I already worked the shipping damage out of the panel.

That was the only Krapperholm panel in the batch. While it seemed a bit bait & switch-ish since they don’t show that it’s a Klokkerholm panel, they do show that panel (without the sticker) in their catalog.

I tried to order from them first, but their catalog is more difficult to navigate unless you know exactly each piece that you need, & when I tried to checkout, it popped up that there wasn’t a shipping option to my city.
Anywho, I carefully removed the lower Deluxe trim.
With that Klokkerholm patch panel in hand, I gave it a rough fit to the bus, dropped it down about an inch, & scribed a line on the side.
I then cut across the dotted line.
All to reveal the remains of the inner rocker.

I began to chisel the remainder of the outrigger off the front, driver side frame rail, and, as expected, I found a soft spot in the frame rail.
So I lopped it out to find that it was packed full of muck.
Having some sections of rail left over from another project, I hacked a piece out…
And whittled it down to size.
And fused it in place.
Then I gave it a quick clean up.

To avoid the painstaking process of measuring, recording those numbers, & then probably losing or mismeasuring as I try to reinstall all this shit, I prefer to use the original parts as guides to accurately reconstruct these beasts. This morning, I continued with my “strategic demolition”.
After cleaning all the existing floor supports of the remains of floor, I attached a few bits of scrap to the top of them.
With the “alignment tabs” in place, I then clamped the inner rocker to the supports.
With the inner rocker attached, I was now able to clamp the outer rocker in place.
