I run the stock size (185R14) load D Hankooks in the summer but run 215/65/16 Extra Load Nord Frost Winter tires from Oct to the end of April. I think the 215/65/16 is as big as I can go on the front without changing out to raised spindles.
The Nord Frost tires are on ET33 rims which give it an extra 1.5" wider stance and give a noticeably smoother and more stable ride, better handling on winding roads, and more ground clearance for those washed out FSR's. Steering is more of a workout when parking though. I have a Subaru swap so no issues with power to drive them and the larger diameter reduces the rpms at hwy speeds.

Apart from the correct commercial van rated tyres, most car tyres are not high enough load rated for a bus. Ideally they need 102 or 104 load rating . but that is hard to find.
You will find clues like the maximum tyre inflation pressure will be 40 psi while the sticker in the bus suggests 45 psi at the rear for full load..
At least my tyres have a max pressure of 50 psi , and a rating of 92XL which is barely into acceptable levels. As a result they get worn out in about 10k miles. |
What do you do to them, to wear them out in only 10,000 miles!?!
My Michelin XZX 185 SR14 Reinforced tyres with a 95 or 96 load index, have covered nearly 30,000 miles and still have about 5½ mm of tread left.
Here is one Hankook 185/80 R14 tyre with a 102/100 load index, from Oponeo, priced at £84 each.

I doubt you could buy an empty cup at Starbucks for $1.
There once were Reinforced/XL rated 207/70/14 tires but I haven't seen those available in decades.
If you are buying 15" tires, there are a few passenger rated tires that are XL at least in those sizes that often appeared on minivans.
Anyway, please buy load-rated tires, at least XL, and I feel better with Load Range C or D. It's a better investment than bitter, burnt coffee too. _________________ Ohio Valley Tribe, Full Moon Bus Club https://www.facebook.com/groups/294422277314227/

I have never graced Starbucks with my presence, so I have no notion what their cups would cost! I loathe coffee! If I am going out for the day, I am inclined to take my ancient Thermos vacuum flask filled with boiling water, a small bottle of milk and some tea bags with me, unless I have the motor-caravan with me, which has integral low-cost tea-making facilities and circa 48 year old melamine drinking-mugs.
I don't think I have ever come across 207/70 R14 tyres anywhere! Is this one of those strange North American sizes!?! There do seem to be some 205/70 R14 commercial-van tyres available, with a 102/100 load index.
https://www.mytyres.co.uk/search?sortCode=none&...Types=LLKW
One should still be able to obtain 195/70 R15C commercial-van tyres, which were the factory-specification for the VW Transporter T4 (i.e. Eurovan in USA parlance!?!). There are plenty of options having a 104/102 load index!
https://www.mytyres.co.uk/rshop/195-70-R15-R
If you substitute 16 inch inch wheels, then you will be spoiled for choice re 195/65 R16C, 205/65 R16C, 215/65 R16C or 215/60 R16C commercial-van tyres. _________________ Regards.

The load index is lower, 99/98H than 185 75 14,Why? Says 8 ply. Load index on 185 is 102. I can't understand why. Sorry, but common sense tells me and van/bus specs says 102. Yes, I like wider but it also cost more. For what? I wonder what the tire pressure would be on 195 75 14?
Even cheaper tire, is the Haida HD 718. 185 75 14 8 ply 102 load rating. Spot on! Ebay $304.93 for 4. Free shipping. #1 tire manufacture in China. |

Lower profile tyres of the same section-width, typically have a lower load rating, all other things being equal! I discovered this when investigating 185/65 R15, 185/60 R15 & 185/55 R15 tyres for the late-1980s vintage MG 2000 Maestro wheels on my 1974 BLMC Triumph Toledo 1300 "HL Special". _________________ Regards.

A tire's rating is pretty proportionate to the mass of the air inside the tire. As the tire profile goes down so does the load, while as the pressure goes up the load rating goes up as well. Other things being equal increasing the diameter and/or width of the tire increases its ability to carry a load. |

ok so after looking around at what is available in my price range locally i found two choices: 185 75 14 and or 205 75 14
My bus has had the same set of 205 75 14 on it for over 10 years with no problems with the little use it gets here on the California coast.
So should I just continue to run the 205 75 14? and get a new set exact same size?
Or should I switch it up to the 185 75 14?
and what would be the pros and cons of each of my two options?
or what other size would you recommend other than the obvious and popular but expensive 185 14C
Keep in mind I don't buy coffee ever at a take away store and eat every meal at home. I never spend 8$ on a coffee not even 1$ ,I buy a big bag of coffee at the grocery outlet for 5$ and that bag lasts me all month....... _________________ Looking for a complete sink unit for early bay window |

A 185/75r14 is way underrated for the weight of the van and will likely feel quite squishy. For a passenger car a 215/70R14 will gets you within a few pounds of the axle load rating and should give good performance. Can't say what brand would age the slowest if only getting a few thousand miles a year.
185r14C tires don't necessarily have to cost all the much more than a passenger tire, and might even be found for less. Harder to find them with a tread that I like though. |

I've used them in the past and liked them better than Hankook but I don't think they are available any longer in our size and load requirement. I remember having to source my last set of Vanco's out of South Africa and the date codes were relatively old. That was like 10 years ago. |

That is good to know. Are they the Vanco's, Vanco 2's or Vanco All Weather model? Please share the date code when you get them. |
