Each time when I try to start my bug (1950 export) the starter cranks the engine, but it won't fire. When I drove the car the day before it may fire once, but then it's all over. I can crank it for over a minute (either with or without choke), but it won't start.

The only way I can start the engine is by taking off the air filter and pour some gas into the carb. When it starts, then I need to hold the gas for a while or it starves again. The (manual) choke is working fine and when the car ran for 30-60s it runs fine. As long as the car is warm, starting is not an issue and it will start flawlessly.

When the car has cooled of for more than a few hours, then I need to use my initial start procedure again. My car also stops running on a warm day after 1 hour of driving and it when it cools down for 15-30 minutes, it runs fine again (although it may stop again after a while). It looks like the engine doesn't get any gas.

Although the latter issue may be related to vapourlock, I begin to suspect my fuelpump. What's the best way to diagnose this?

For the one who's interested. This is my car (own it since the late 90's):

First check both screens.
One in the fuel tank and the other at the bottom of the fuel tap.
They may be partially clogged.

I had it once with my Oval 53.Difficult cold start, driving and stalling.Had to wait 5-15 minutes before I could start again.
Condensation(water) in the bottom filter : cleaned it and problem solved.

Regards.

I'll check that. I guess when I close the fuel valve, then I can safely open up the bottom screw? I'll have to check if these screens are still in there, because I also have an inline fuel-filter in the rubber hose underneath the car. It has been replaced last year, so it should be fine (I have the starting and stalling issue already for several years now).

Yes, close the fuel valve.Make sure you have a spare seal/gasket
From the owner's manual August 1950.

Next time it's hard to start, take the top off the carb and see if there is gas in the fuel bowl. My guess is it'll be empty and you have a fuel delivery problem. Even small things can make the pump work sporadically, like a clogged tank vent, or a pump check valve that won't seat.

I cleaned the filter in the fuel tap and removed the additional inline fuel filter yesterday. Today, the car started much easier. Have to do some more testing, but it looks like it is much bett.er now. I’ll add the cleaning of the filter to the “start-of-season” list.
