I've got my doors all assembled and I'm ready to put them back on the car, but I'm afraid to pound the hinge pins into the top hinges. I'm changing from the side mount mirror that came with my '69, to the hinge pin mirrors of the earlier bugs. The original pins were an absolute monster to get out, and I'd be ashamed to tell you guys what I had to do to get some hinges with pins removed painted up and ready to go. Obviously the new pins have the threads on top to accept the mirror base, and I don't want to damage the threads while pounding them down into the hinges.
Any tricks to make this a bit more friendly? Sandpaper on the pins? Run a drill bit through the hinges? What size bit to ream it out? Grease/oil? Great big punch down the center of the threads and a sledgehammer? What do you think?

Yes that makes perfect sense. Probably ought to ask the folks with hinge pin mirrors, right? |

I put hinge pin mirrors on my 71 super. I used a brass punch to hammer them in.
I guess I did not take many photos of the process (I'm a bad forum user).
EDIT -
I ended up renting a tool from someone on the forums to get the pins out, they were a real bear to get out. |

Easier putting them in than getting the old ones out ? |

Dead simple, getting the pins out was a million times harder than installing them
A little persuasion from a punch and the hammer and you will be home free.
My hinges were not newly painted, but I doubt you will mar the paint up too much, nothing a little touch up paint cant cover anyway. |

You already asked this exact same question in the 58-67 forum.
Stick the pins in the fridge overnight. Or in dry ice if you have it. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

And clean the paint out of the hinge pin holes, and use a lube |

I actually asked it here first, viking. If you'll notice in the very first response above, it was then recommended that I ask in the early forums, because 68+ bugs don't come with hinge pin mirrors, so I did. I will try the cold pins, and maybe a rifle bore brush down the holes on a drill to clear the paint... Thanks for the suggestions |
