I ordered new rear brake hoses. I took one off and noticed both ends are female. The ones they sent have one female and one male end. I do a search and all I see are the female/male hoses. Is this right? Did a previous owner change out the brakes on my car or something. Or are there two types of these hoses and I just have to find the right ones.

When I resurrected my 1970 VW back in 2016-2017, I discovered the same. There are female/female hoses available, I had to return and order correct hydraulic lines for mine.
And also had similar issue with rear on my 1971 Super two decades earlier. Learned to remove parts and THEN compare !

A US 69 Chassis would have a CV joint axle IRS suspension rear with the male/female hoses. Maybe your 69 has had an earlier chassis installed with the Swing Axle tube style suspension that would of had the female/female hoses. Below is what a common 69 chassis would look like where the male portion of the brake hose threads into the brass mounted fittings. If you need the female/female hoses, they are simply 67 and earlier rear Beetle ones.

Dang it, turns out I do have a swing arm suspension. Finding out all kinds of things wrong with this car. No idea why previous owner(s) would have changed the suspension. And my brake lines look nothing like yours, looks like all kinds of things were modified. Thanks for the tip, Ill look into getting 67 F/F hoses. |

My guess is they dropped a 69 body on a 67 chassis. Do the VIN numbers match between the plate on the dashboard under the windshield and the rear tunnel hatch under the rear seat? _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

Yes, all Vins match under the hood, under the rear seat, and my pink - 119263344, did a vin search and some research and its definitely a 69 |

It was built in September of '68 and sometimes they used left over parts early in production runs but I thought all '69s were IRS. _________________ '69 Beetle (pieces)

Yeah it’s all messed up. And I just put on 69 rear drum pads, now I’m wondering if those are wrong to, and if I need to start ordering for a 67 instead of a 69, even though the car is a 69 |

If you haven't already gotten around to the front brakes and replaced the wheel bearings, be advised that you might have earlier spindles which have a smaller diameter and use a different inner bearing and grease seal than what is typically sold for a '69. This is what I have on my '69 (built in November, 1968). No way to tell if it came from the factory this way or a PO (or VW repair shop) swapped early spindles for late ones somewhere along the line. It's very possible that various parts got interchanged and swapped out over the last 50+ years on most of our cars. _________________ Tom
