Hi everyone,
My name is Yannick, 33 years old and I live in Belgium. I've been into aircooled VW since I was 17.
My previous project was a 1964 bug that I owned for +10 years. I turned it into a callook, then restored it and sold it january for a new project.
A couple of weeks after I sold the '64 I bought a 1957 coral red callook oval. I bought it because it is a sollid car and because I like the color
First thing was to replace the US headlight with EU headlights.
Bought a set of fogglights
And painted them coral red
A set of EU bumpers and 356 wheels to change the look of the car
Out with the 'old' engine
Fixed the wiring, replaced all the fuellines and painted some parts
The new engine that is currently being build (Riechert kit, fram filter, ..)
Bought a set of original wheels
And repainted them:
To be continued |

After reading and seeing the first posts, especially when I saw the coral on these sport rims I was thinking it won't be worth to look further, because I'm a stock-nazi. Glad I read also the rest because it turned out to get intresting. Thank you for the nice job on the stock wheels and giving it back a 30hp engine with period arrangements! That is and will be a beautiful car! |

Agree 100% with the above.
Coral is one of my favorite colors, and I love the transformation back to stock.

Wauw, thanks!
I've always been into customizing bugs but I appreciate the vintage scene more and more. I can't wait to start driving this thing |

Time for an update
So I started making a set of floormats. The old set was black..
Used the old ones to make a new set (with some adjustments)
For the trunk I had nothing to start from
Then I've cutted some fabric for the edges of the floormats
Et voila:
The heatherchannels were white (the car was originally coral red but was painted white during its lifetime ) so they needed some paint
The steering colomn tube had seen better days
(The shifter also has been repainted)
Also added some extra gauges
And mounted the Marshal lights, Love it!

Please share the paint code for the "rusty brown" color used on your rims. It looks perfect! |

This car is incredibly beautiful.
I especially love the wheel transformation.
Prior to seeing this I did not know why I did like not the two color wheels on stock '63s such as mine, but now I know why.
At some point during production, the inner and outer colors were reversed. Body color on yours is outside with the cream color on the inside. For my year, the body color is on the inside with the cream on the outside.
I much prefer the cream inners. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”

That is a beautiful vintage VW and some very nice preservation work. Very inspiring for me as coral is my favorite color for this era. For the last year or so I've been considering letting the 57 Deluxe that I've had stashed in the barn (original coral red car) for 35 years go to an new caretaker. Seeing this car kinda puts a different spin on my thinking. Since acquiring this car, I've never considered a different color than the original coral in the event that I pulled it out and and started work on it. It's almost a virtual zero rust car per my original evaluation. I've been enjoying the heck out of the 63/64 rag-top 117 this Summer.
