| 1995 EV, on a road trip and the stick shift failed: there's no H pattern, the shifter is completely loose and won't go into any gears. I found a mechanic who is familiar with Eurovans and he believes it's just the shifter bushing that failed and he has a new one on order. I think he's right and this will be an easy and inexpensive fix. Anyone else had this happen and can confirm? |

Yep, exactly what has happened. There are reports of using zip ties to patch it together as to drive but it sounds like you have a mechanic on it already.
I'd ultimately replace them all and I keep a spare set now as the new ones aren't as good as the originals.
Good luck,

There are several bushings which could have given up the ghost. If you have no H pattern then its most likely one of the two bushings just under the shifter, #35 in the diagram below. A posting about these failing: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=752313
Besides #35, there are other bushings which are apart of the shifting mechanism and could potentially cause a lack of ability to shift when they break.

| Awesome, thanks. I'll pass this on to my guy. He's having trouble finding a good supplier (Nevada/Arizona (Phoenix) so any recommendations gladly accepted! |

| To follow up: My guy ordered a few different bushings as he couldn't figure out the exact part needed based on my year. One of the parts was a perfect fit, and was a ten-minute fix. Van is back on the road now. |

This just happened a few weeks ago as well. I was driving on a highway and the shifter felt wonky. It wouldn't go into the 1st nor the 2nd at the stop light. I nursed it over to a sidewalk parking spot in 3rd gear. I noticed the "cup" number 45 broke and the ball end of the shifter linkage popped out. Fortunately I had some tools in the van and was able to take the #52 bracket off to realign the shifter. Once temporarily realigned, it will go into 1st once. Anyways, I had an interesting drive back where I cruised on the highway in 3rd gear, doing 55 mph. Then in order to get home, which sits on a pretty decent hill, I had to pull over, realign the shifter and get it into 1st gear. Lastly, I had to reverse into the garage which required the plate #50 to be pushed in by hand and turned to get into the reverse gear while the engine was off.
The driving like this is probably not for a faint of heart but wanted to share just in case someone is crazy (stupid) like me to avoid towing.
As for the replacement of the cup, I was able to do it from the top with some finger acrobatics. The bracket on my 95 looks different from the part #44 shown on the diagram. Using an extension and ratchetting wrench I was able to get the bolts (46) out. The I was able to squeeze in the cup into the bracket using my hands and a flat head screwdriver. In order to get the shifter bracket back into the cup, I used a long pipe to leverage against the opposite ball 41 end to pop it back in. _________________ 1995 Eurovan ACU 5 speed |
