Is the proper color for my 1950 Hoffman standard split pope's nose inner lens red or orange? Thanks!

as it's a brake light I would go for red. were the orange ones fitted to the early riveted lights?

Well, to answer your question, our original December 1949 Belgian standard has a riveted pope’s nose and the original inner lens is orange.

I have a '50 split and the pope nose has the original lenses. Brake lens is orange. see below!

I am of the opinion that the inner lens is red. I used to make them, and boil red acrylic to shape them properly. I think the "orange" ones wre jsut red ones whose pigment has faded over time. I have an original lens that is very orange... but very red at the edges where UV exposure was minimal.

I agree with you John. The brake lens faded over the years making it look orange instead of red.

Interesting. Someone replaced the lens in my pope's nose with an orange one, which is clearly aftermarket and must have been based on the belief that the lens was originally orange vs. faded red. It makes sense it would have been red, so I'll purchase a red one and replace the incorrect one. Thanks everyone for your insight.

If someone had an original brake lens that faded into orange, it can be brought back using Krylon stained glass paint:

Or they just grabbed what they had in their collection, and since it was a solid original faded piece or a random repop, it worked. I think I would like to ask the Tootsie Roll Owl about this matter because the world may never know. 🦉 😂😂😂😂

I am just now doing my pope's nose restoration... my inner lens is coated by a red film that someone put in place using scotch tape around the edges. While it is servicable, I would like to restore this lens. Does anyone have a tip for me on this?

I've used tamiya translucent acrylic model paint in the past but i see that the porsche guys suggest using "Testors" brand spray paint "Translucent Candy Apple Red" #1605.

results look good, see https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/316098-painting-tail-lights-red.html

only use acrylic or enamel paint as lacquer can affect the plastic.
