I’m on a road trip and when coasting down hill, foot off the accelerator, we occasionally hear a whistle wheezing sound from the switch on the brake pedal. It will last a few seconds and/or it stops if I depress the accelerator.

What is this switch and any idea why it whistles when coasting down hill?

There are two switches on the brake pedal. One cancels the cruise control. It is a dual function switch. It breaks an electrical connection, so it has wires coming into it, and it opens a vacuum to the atmosphere, so it has a vacuum line attached. http://vweurovan.wikia.com/wiki/Cruise_Control_Brake_Switch

The vacuum switch was my first thought, but then I remembered that this is a drive by wire engine, so there isn't any vacuum actuator used. Does it still use the vacuum switch?

Hi - has anyone resolved this?

I recently purchased a one-owner, 2002 Eurovan MV Westfalia that's in great condition. A few days ago it started making this high pitch noise, and I'm wondering if anyone here found a resolution.

Thanks!

It is likely a leaky brake booster.

Nice - do I need to replace the booster or can I spray something on it or replace a seal or repair it in any way? Thank you!

First confirm the diagnosis by disconnecting and plugging the vacuum line to the booster. If the noise goes away, you've found it.

The usual failure is that the diaphraghm inside gets a tear in it, replacement is usually the only option.
