The front tin had a an extra piece riveted tomit so I pulled that off
Blasted the tin
Welded up the holes
Hit it with self etching primer before it goes back to black

Well I made progress.
Got the large pieces cut out of the donor.
Tomorrow I will work on fitting some of those to the car. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Oh, I also discovered that at some point someone cut off the wrap around end of the hoover bit so I have a replacement for that coming as well. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Progress.
Patch panels all cut, blasted and sprayed with weld through primer.
Starting on the other side while that dries. I hoped to get both back corners done today. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Getting there. Didn't quite get to my goal.
But I am tuckered out.
I need to knock those spot welds down and then put the metal strip that holds the right side of the engine seal in.........tomorrow.
Then I will tackle a design for the remoeable apron.
I also need to repair the flange that holds the deck.lid seal. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

I was a little under the weather the past day or so but I did get the new fan and all the proper engine seals so I am back at it.
I guess I should fix the hole on the upper left while I am in there. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

This apron doesn't suck for 50 years old but it could be better. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Not sure why this was cut off but I also see it was cracked and welded at some point. I need all the help with cooling I can get!

Years ago on a Baja I had a fan that had cracked the inner double D out of and it would spin on the shaft under load.
When I pulled the 30mm fan and replaced it today with the 36mm one I discovered this:
Did any 30mm fans not have a double D hole or is this worn out? It does not appear to have been spinning on the shaft like the one I mentioned above but I thought they were all double D. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

I recently learned it was call the "hoover bit." That was a new name to me.
https://www.jbugs.com/vw-doghouse-oil-cooler-to-fan-shroud-sealing-tin-hoover-bit.html
It wraps around the bottom of the oil cooler to force air through the cooler and not below it.. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Tomorrow's plan - welding, grinding, and mounting the apron. A bit optimistic but we shall see. The handbrake is leaving to see her mom early in the AM so maybe. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

hey Heiferman,
Wow I see what you mean now last post you mentioned the Engine gasket to body and the missing attachment points.
Sure glad you're fixing all that.
I would think the fan should have had a "D" so it wouldn't spin but depending on what year fan that was but I'm not sure.
I replaced my fan with a welded one from CB's after some reading on using the serpentine belt system 'could' cause too many rpm's on the fan due to lack of belt slip.
Of course the mod's I did I doubt I'd ever explode the fan, but just to be sure I went with the welded fan.
I believe my old fan I removed was larger that the one you show, if I can find it I can doublecheck it.
And my 73 was missing the "hoover bit" as well as the thermostat and the doors in the doghouse for the thermostat.
I did add the hoover bit and re-gasketed everything for max air cooling but I didn't replace any of the thermostat items.
Stay on it man you'll get it, sorry it's being a pain but you'll reap the rewards of all your hard work soon and enjoy the ride!

Been pretty unproductive the past few days. I did not feel like dragging myself out to the shop and then I was supposed to be in Arkansas for a Toyota event but my beloved Landcruiser shit the bed in Tupelo, MS yesterday so I tossed a bandaid on it and came home.
But today is a new day. This afternoon I finished welding in all the patch panels. This car has about 2 tons of bondo on it. I knew there was a bunch but the PO did me no favors cutting holes where he did. I will have to slather some back on. There must have been a decent rear ender at some point.
The edge for the deck lid seal turned out pretty good.
On to making the brackets to hold the donor apron on and knock that out. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Last ones for tonight.
Apron mounts are made.
Everything is painted and the apron is soaking in evaporust.
I think I can probably put the engine back in tomorrow or for sure Saturday if I want the Rustoleum to cure more.
I will have some body work to do around the rectangular patch but I am not bothering with that right now.
Almost ready for the concorde de smelligance. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Long afternoon. But it is running again.
I won't judge on the temp until I get the apron back in. But it did seem hot for the 15 minutes it idled in the garage. Hopefully just heat off the header. Head temp was at about 300F when I shot it with the laser but that was too close the the exhaust to get a good reading.
Oil temp was avout 160 at the dipstick.

On the list is to finish the apron and then redo that bondo where I welded in patches. Then toss the bumper back on. I really like the fitment of the Tri-Mil. It does not hang below the the extra oul sump. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Finally back to it.
When I was working on the rear apron I started picking at a crack in some body filler and a slab fell out. So I repaired both corners below the tail lights. Beat them out some so they needed less filler. I freakin hate ysing it but really sometimes it is the only answer.
This car must have been hit all kinda ways in its long 52 year life. And the POs just kept covering it up!
Good enough for me. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Dunno how long this will take a couple square feet at a time but eventually the plan is tam with the black accents (top, welting, bumpers)
