Join us Sunday, October 13, 2024 from 9 - 3 pm on the grassy lawn of the Larz Anderson Auto Museum for the annual Volkswagen Day show - Transporterfest! The show attracts air and water-cooled cars from around New England and beyond together with a swap area on the lower lawn and awesome antique autos and automobilia on display inside the historic carriage house on the Larz Anderson estate.
There are dash plaques for show cars and awards offered in various classes.

There is a pre-show campout held at Winter Island Park in Salem, Massachusetts. Camping is $20 per night and officially begins on Friday, but a few folks arrive Thursday to explore the area before the busy season kicks off. We camp in group areas "The Igloo" and "Fort Pickering." There are no utility, electric, or water hookups, but bathrooms and showers are nearby. Make sure not to leave any food or coolers out overnight, racoons here are certified geniuses and will figure out how to get into your Yeti...
For those campers who brave to take on the Witch City, there are tons of activities, tours, shops, and events to check out around Salem. I have been visiting Salem every year since 2003, and own the phrase "been there, done that, got the t-shirt." There's lots of campy tours and pop-up shops that profess to be museum-quality. Don't get caught in a tourist trap - I have compiled my favorite places to visit at salem.obnoxiousblue.com together with an interactive map to help you plan your route
The Transporterfest Rally leaves Sunday morning at 8 am from Winter Island Park bound for the show at Larz Anderson! Please only join the caravan if you plan to remain with the group throughout the trip. If you need to divert for fuel, food, or choose to follow a different route please wait until after the group leaves. Each year, without fail, someone in the middle of the line decides to take a different route and predictably takes half the caravan with them. Then people get lost and upset. Don't be that guy. It is epic to see a line of buses cruising down the highway, you don't want to miss it! If you have a FRS/GMRS radio or walkie talkie (like those blister pack radios) bring it! It helps us to keep together during the trip.
Our route takes about 60 minutes and intentionally avoids the obvious path directly south through Boston where the roads are short and twisty, with lots of lights. Even if you're not rolling in the rally, it is suggested to follow the route below.
Follow the route to Brookline at transporterfest.obnoxiousblue.com _________________ Mike

Should be there with a kid in tow. Plan on leaving The Cape about 7am, anyone from these parts headed to Boston that Sunday morning, I’m usually zooming over the bridge about 730-ish and up route 3.
I’ll have some parts for swapping, lots of it going cheap. Smalls, odds and ends, incomplete heater parts/ducts for bay window. I have some westy pop up parts, specifically the bunk bed plywood pieces, the metal trim for canvas/body. These are kinda large, so pm if interested and I’ll bring them. I’ll basically give these pop up piece away for free if anyone wants them. I’m tired for looking at them in the garage.
I’m looking for rebuilt bay window torsion arms and ball joints (ready to install) if anyone has any in their parts stash. Will swap you cores if you want. Also looking for westy city water cover for the side of the bus. Mine blew off a long time ago.
See you there! _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

Any info and room for a newcomer to come camp? We're usually up in VT that weekend, but not this fall, and finally want to make it to Transporterfest with our van for once! Plus we haven't been camping enough this summer and need a last hurrah.
If it matters I have a 91 Westy Weekender/Multivan, wife, kid and 2 dogs (if they're allowed). |

Shouldn't be an issue at all. Stan will chime in soon, but there are two group areas - we do max out on space but most folks are "regulars" that don't check in here.
Dogs are allowed at Winter Island, most of Salem is very dog friendly. Just make sure to bring poo bags and clean up after your pet. Some of the museums/house tours won't let dogs inside as they are centuries old.
Camping officially kicks off on Friday the 11th, but some folks arrive on Thursday. Camping is $20/night. We occupy two group sites - "The Igloo" and "Fort Pickering". The Igloo tends to be a bit packed and is the "noisier" of the areas and pretty much ground zero for the weekend festivities. There are bathrooms on site and within a close walk from each of the group areas. They are older and are shared with the rest of the CG. In the summer season when the beach is open they get a bit messed up, but in the cooler season they're in good shape and looked after. Most people camping at Winter Island have travel trailers or larger campers with their own bathrooms. It's nice to have HOT water for a morning shower.
There is a hop-on-hop-off shuttle that moves through Salem, the day pass isn't cheap but is a good option if you plan to explore the village for one day. I prefer to bring a bike.

Getting close. Did my TFPrep and adjusted points, adjusted rear brakes (which turned into replacing the passenger side rear wheel cylinder), and got my reverse lights working again finally.
Need to do a rip to Hyannis on route 6 at top speed to make sure everything is good. Otherwise, looking good so far.
Anyone interested in those westy parts I’m giving away? _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

First time in years that I won't be there Thursday night or Friday morning.
Out of vacation time and few employees in the office on Friday.
I'll arrive whenever Boston traffic allows.
(If anyone is interested in Vanagon South African Grill complete with outer headlight buckets, and new inner lights, PM me and I can bring it to T-Fest) _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"
