As always, camping in Salem is an awesome lead up to a great show - and the wrap on the camping and show season. This year marked 21 years in Salem for me, and to be honest - while lots has changed in almost 400 years, not much has changed in the most recent 21... But it's always fun to see the city with the fresh eyes that friends bring.
We skipped out on Boston this year in favor of more time around Winter Island and it didn't disappoint. It was fun to walk around town, explore the Haunted Happenings events and lots of eating! Friday's aurora was the most intense I have ever seen and had us all running around the campground for the best view.
The annual Transporterfest Air Hockey World Championship games featured a new, smaller, and faster air hockey table and the unofficial official results declare that Jim Philips is this year's champion... The trick you ask? Simply play like you're not playing - your opponent will undoubtedly always score on themselves.
Sunday's caravan departed Winter Island with 16 buses/vans - I think we picked a few more up along the ride.
We caught a bit of rain in the morning but for the most part it passed and left just overcast skies around 11 am. The show and swap were smaller, but as always, the weather doesn't scare off the hard core VW fans!
Thanks to Stan for hosting, the gen-u-ine funk master and spin doctor DJ Jimmy D, the folks at Larz Anderson, and everyone who came to camp in Salem!
The camp out has gotten smaller than in years past, but is totally worth checking out. If you haven't camped in Salem, there's nothing cooler than Winter Island! _________________ Mike

Was such a fun time again this year. A little chill in the air and drizzle on the windshields won’t keep us away! Thanks all for the extra photos on here too!

unpopular opinion...
when did watercooled stuff become part of transporterfest?
I mean at this point, may as well call it Fall Terryville.... _________________

It has been ‘Transporterfest/VW day’ for over 10 years. We always get some cool water-cooled entries, especially on rainy dayz. |

Help me out here, what has rain got to do with the turnout of air cooled transporters? I have yet to see one that was a convertible and even if there were such a thing... could you not put the roof up?

Here in New England, only a few folks are willing to drive vintage vw's long distance to a vw show in the rain. The show is called transporterfest, but it for all vw's. _________________ Parts for sale https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?username=APPLEGREENVW

“Transporterfest” was originally branded by the LiMBO group (maybe even NEATO), which focused on buses, and later bays, and Vanagons. Their shows were always bus-centric with names like Transporters by the Tunnel, West River Westies, Buses by the Big Duck, Westies at Watkins etc.
Given that is a generally small net to cast for a single day event, and the partnership with Larz Anderson Auto Museum afforded space to accommodate other vehicles, the VW Day name was added to keep in line with Larz Anderson other events which usually are titled by the manufacturer name - followed by “day”.
The names are used interchangeably, with most of the old guard saying Transporterfest - especially with regards to camping which was added a few years ago - and some of the promotional material saying VW Day. Even Larz Anderson’s website used the Transporterfest banner.
While some folks surely would prefer a VW bus only event, the reality is that such an event would be a fraction of the size and thusly not as feasible to promote or run. Awards, shirts, insurance, all of which become more affordable when spread across a greater pool of participants.
Additionally, Columbus Day Weekend is known for some rainy weather. While many of us are excited to be out even if it rains, that is not the case for all owners. We don’t shame them, their cars are theirs to drive as and when they see fit. However, recognizing that weather often means lower attendance if the show were limited to only Aircooled cars or buses. We could anticipate even lower numbers. Let’s not be obnoxious in speaking down to folks who don’t want to bring their cars out, simply because you might.
The watercooled scene in New England is big and many of those cars in attendance are now antique or approaching it in their own rite. They make for an entertaining show and they appreciate the Aircooled cars too. Everyone who goes to a car show is welcome to explore and appreciate the cars that satisfy their taste and ignore the cars that don’t. But, in fairness the “shunning” is usually set by the older cars upon the newer cars.
The campout and show are strong, the show remains a staple in the north east VW scene and we’re happy for folks to come regardless of weather or model. _________________ Mike
