Those 36HP fresh air engine have a few unique features. 7.2 compression, special intake manifold with long exhaust crossover tubes and breast plate to reach them. Little tapped ears on the bottom of the engine case for fastening engine tin. Oil is drained by the strainer plate instead of boss on the case. The boss is still there but not drilled and tapped for a drain plug. Just like my 65 111, there should be no seat tracks, only the two studs per seat with a claw and wingnut to hold them down.
And a FYI to all concerned, the last "standard" was 1964, in 1965 they are called 1200"A"! |

^^^ so many fun things about this Kar. It’s why I love it so much. Most folks know this style as a Standard. 1200 A was the model . Correct? Specifically a type 111 Standard. I know of a 67 standard rag top beetle as well. There are countless threads and internet searches resulting in this Kar and later cars being a standard. However with that said I do not claim definitive understanding of the subject in its entirety. The collector I got from called it a standard, the World Wide Web calls it’s a standard. I definitely do not need to be rite, but I don’t feel wrong. I hear and respect your interpretation, maybe a few more folks can pop in with additional information.

I witnessed, the mechanic in the adjacent bay to mine, loose a fingernail when one of the springs slipped during a similar removal procedure. The pliers failed and the spring went flying across the room, along with his fingernail! Really gross to find.
I was taught to leave the retaining pins out. Assemble the one shoe into the wheel cylinder. Add the top spring, then attach the second shoe to the top spring, then pivot the shoe into the bottom of the wheel cylinder groove, sliding it up and into place. With the top spring in both shoes and the shoes in the wheel cylinder pistons, add the bottom spring. Set one shoe into the adjuster and rotate it away from the backing plate. Then install the other shoe by pulling it over and dropping it into the adjuster. Once in place push each shoe, one at a time against the backing plate and secure them with the retainers.
No chance of a spring getting loose or ripping anything from one’s body!
Everyone has their own way. I get that. But that finger nail haunts me! It was just a gross event. Just be safe!

Thanks for the pictures. Now that you proved it, did I know I was right. BTW the 1200"A" Custom is also considered a 1200"A". These are rare cars these days. Restoring to original would be the way to go. |
