Have the possibility of acquiring a Porsche 1300S experimental motor and looking at putting it into a 1954 Beetle as a project. Any information on what mods need to be done for an install? I understand the motor will bolt up to the VW transaxle, but engine sheet metal, muffler mods need to happen.... maybe more? Any info sources appreciated!! _________________ Scott |

What condition is the 1300S motor in? They only produced 60 hp when new and for the cost I'd put a VW 1600 in. May not look as cool but it is far less expensive! |

It's basically the long block. All the carbs, manifolds, generator, oil filter, and engine tin would have to be found. There were a couple of spots where my contact was going to look into.
So unless one got extremely lucky in finding the pieces at a reasonable $$!
I also remember the the old Foreign Car magazine article from back in the sixties. Anyway it is cool and wondered if any of these attempts still exist. _________________ Scott |

There is a split in Connecticut with a 356/912 engine that came down to Flanders All Air Cooled Gathering several years ago. Super cool to see, but the owner said it was hellishly expensive to get running well.
Maybe 8-9 years ago I got 2 912 complete 912 engines from a stash, , and just the parts to do a rebuild was 3-4x what a VW engine would be _________________ modok wrote:

Some thoughts and questions:
> please give us pics with numbers
> why is the engine not (no more) complete?
> what means "experimental"? (not original, individual technic, somehow faked?)
> a original 1300 S has a roller crank > very expensive to overhaul!
> how long sitting?
> sorry, imo it sounds, this longblock can be a damaged and left over part of histotry.
> suggest, if you really want to put a 356 engine into your 54, look for an engine with plain bearings (expensive enough)
> with luck you, or the seller can find a Porsche guy, needing a (original only!!!) 1300 S, prepared to pay good bucks for.
good luck |

Apparently one of 26 of these motors produced.
For the reasons you noted, it was a neat idea but not practical.
Send me a message if you are interested in further details. _________________ Scott |

Thanks for the pic, but the numbers are not visable.
Clear is, it´s a "modern" 3-piece Porsche case, so from end 1954 till 9´57, if it´s really a 1300 S.
The fuel pump is from T 6 onwards.
Sorry, for me, I´m not interested in 1300 S in a 3-piece case. If it was a original 2-piece case, that would be another thing.
Imo, today nearly nobody wants a 1300 ccm engine in a 3 piece case for a 356, even if there is a original 1300 S number on it. These engines mostly get 1600 ccm or more when once overhauled.
But of course, the case with the right numbers and details is still intersting for the Porsche guys with a real 1300 S car.
For beetle, with luck, sometimes you can find an Porsche industrial engine with 1600 or 1700 ccm for a rather moderate price.
But at least, parts for 3 piece engines are more easy to find.
Again good luck |
