Hi everyone,

Not sure if there’s much interest here, or if I should post updates like I did with my last projects? Question

I’ve pulled one of my Barndoors out of storage and am about to dive into a pretty intensive round of repairs the next months.
This one’s in rough shape—very bent and twisted—so it’ll be quite a challenge, but hey, I’m still young! Laughing

This bus actually came from my friend Erich, and I know a few folks here might remember him. I’m really grateful he let me have it to try my hand at restoring a Barndoor. I am dreaming about this very long!
My goal is to turn it into a good driver—something reliable but not too precious, so I can actually use it. We’ll see how it goes. Rolling Eyes

I’m excited to learn as much as I can along the way.

So here are some pictures of getting that thing into my workshop.
Wink

Looks like an interesting challenge.
If you are in need of an 52 bus engine, I have 20 - 0 488 xxx.

While i sit next to the car drinking some beer i had seen a letter, after some hours of paint removing i see some more letters, the paint are bot going off easily, but the letters do...

I put a 53 door in the panel and a older window frame to check the gaps, looks much better.

Some Halloween fun...

Subscribed! There is nothing better on the Samba than a good Barndoor build.

I enjoyed your deluxe build and I am excited to see the progress you make on this panel.

Do you know any of this bus's history before your friend owned it?

Very cool project, I think that a lot of people here like to follow such projects and their progress. Even if there isn't that much feedback because it's more just looking than acting. I won't exempt myself from that...
The box looks sturdy in some places and like it was worked with a giant can opener in others. What happened to it?
Anyway nice project !

Finally! You are here in the 'pro' forum for the slim and proper ladies. It was about time to leave them 'fat chicks' be.... Wink Laughing

I will second above thought, and ask if you know any history about the bus ? most probably Austrian delivered?

it seems, that it had a crash and the area where you scraped the paint appears to have torch heat spots from straightening.
Are you thinking about another patina restoration, or rather some functional repaint? Are you going to split the chassis from the shell ?
So many questions, that we will hopefully be updated here in the future.

I have followed along with your other builds and enjoyed them very much. Excited to see the progress on this one.

Not much chatter here but lots of interest and lots of knowledge.

I think your bus is earlier than July, The inspection plate in your picture above was discontinued at chassis number 20-026364. My bus 20-026662 is a may 52 bus and doesn't have the hole.

Good luck with the project!

I see a body number on the bulkhead so makes it later than May I believe? And the chassis number is quite clear. I wouldn't be surprise if they just found some old panels and used them.

I've been following your T1 renovation and it's perfect metal work. I'm rebuilding a BD51, and I've learned a lot from your work. I look forward to working on your barndoor. It's a vw with soul, and like so many others, it deserves to be back on the road. IN
