Hi all,
Can a generator be removed from a 25hp split beetle without removing the engine? Can only find info on later engines
Thanks in advance

Can it not be removed without removing the decklid? Same like with later Beetles by removing the big nut of the fan so that it stays put while sliding the motor out? |

This is the process in the '61-'65 Bentley manual. The fan shroud got much larger in '63 so given the smaller size of the 25/36hp shroud, you have much more room to lift of the shroud.
1. Disconnect cables from regulator
2. Remove carburetor
3. Take off fan belt.
4. Disconnect generator mounting strap.
5. Remove throttle ring and the screws on both sides of fan housing.
6. Remove four screws on fan cover and take of generator and fan.
If I remember correctly, I used this method on my first bug, a '65 with fresh air fan shroud which is much larger. Didn't remove the deck lid. The only time I ever removed the deck lid and hinges was to replace oil cooler seals, where the shroud had to come off completely. _________________ Chris

Isn't the oil cooler preventing the fan shroud to come off then? _________________ Oval 54 Light Beige, Oval 53 Metalblue. |

2 things:
> engine can have the higher old style rounded oil cooler.
> if original, the tube for ignition wires is present,
both things make pulling the fan house upwards or pulling the gen tricky.
Adjusting the hinges and hood takes time and is risky for scratches afterwards. (hood spring!)
Imo, in summary, pulling the engine is the better and direct way with lower risks.
What about condition of clutch and fly wheel oil seal, oil cooler seals?
Are the cooling finns still clean?
A comfort service act before winter can be a good solution for the next spring and years. (only a proposal) |

I did that job a month ago and found the easiest way is to unscrew the fan big nut of 36mm in the back, loosen the fan shroud and lift it a bit after removing the carb and ignition tube. You can also remove the throttle ring but it's not really mandatory, just loosen it up and undo the spring. After removing the four bolts of the backing plate and mounting strap, you can lift it over the generator stand. _________________ Oval 54 Light Beige, Oval 53 Metalblue. |

Either take the engine out or remove the engine lid. Either way then you can take apart and assemble all the gen/fan parts properly in your sight.
Taking the fan/gen apart with engine in or lid in place means you have to take it all apart with many parts out of sight. So too easy to drop spacers down into the shroud around the cylinders, which then will require engine removal anyway.
Then assembling all those parts out of sight where you can off center shims or drop them again or crush/damage them due to being off center. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
