I'm trying to put a 74 VW THING transmission in a Karman Ghia floor pan. Which CV joints/axles would I need?

The Thing flanges are larger so you either need to change flanges or the stub axles.

Are the Thing stub axles the same length as a Beetle/Ghia IRS stub axle?

(don't know this either way but suspect the Thing stub axle is different, so changing the flanges on trans might be the simpler way to do the swap)

You have several choices.

1. Use your Ghia axles and use a Ghia CV on one end of the axle and a Thing CV on the other end. Bug & Ghia use 90mm CV joints. Thing & Bus use 100mm CV joints. You won't need to do anything to your Ghia chassis or the Thing transaxle.

2. You can change the CV flanges on the transaxle and use Bug CV flanges. Then use all your Ghia axles and CV's.

3.You can change the stub axles on the Ghia to Thing stub axles and use the Thing axles and CV's.

If you're building a mild streetcar with 100 HP engine or less just do #1 or #2 whichever is easiest for you.
If you're building a big stroker engine and will see any drag racing #3 will be the strongest.

The Thing transaxle is geared lower than the Ghia trans
74 Ghia (AN code) transaxle has a 3.88 R&P with 3.78/2.06/1.26/.89 gears
74 Thing (AV code) transaxle has a 4.12 R&P with 3.78/2.06/1.26/.93 gears.

Scott... Bug & Thing stub axles are the same length and interchangeable, they just use different sized CV joints.
