Howdy,
1953 Oval
Removed rear taillights to fit heart units.
Discovered fenders have indents, definitely factory, heart brackets don’t fit.
Are these possibly older split fenders?
Will load a few pics.
Not sure how to install lights now….

Yep. You hit the jackpot. Split fenders. They will bring a pretty penny. Should still have some change left over after you sell them and buy the correct fenders for your car.

What do they look like from the back sides in the tailight areas? The visible bondo makes me think these need to be investigated a bit more.

Is it possible they are original, factory used left over parts from previous years???
There is no Bondo, solid as hell.
The pinkish color you see is what I believe to be the original lead primer??
The car received a repaint, very poorly done at that, at some point, you can see the great sanding marks and the poor paint.
It was only top coated, no jambs, underside was shot. |

I seriously doubt it. VW wasn't having parts shortages at that point so they would have to have been replaced at some point.
The original primer is a medium to slightly darker grey. They never used red primer.
That pink sure looks like a skim coat of bondo. Lot's of shops skim VWs with bondo to make things smoother. Beetle fenders are particularly challenging to smooth out after repairing dents so you usually end up with a thin layer of bondo over a large area, even for a small repair.

They definitely are original split fenders, not grafted in light mounts.
Any idea what they are worth?

shipping is outrageous lately, so location sometimes matters as much as condition....
I've seen them sell for $300-700 here on the east coast. Often it seems how badly the seller needs the money, or how much the buyer needs the part determines the price more that the actual condition.
