"64 beetle ,40hp. Points were pitted so I took them out, filed them and replaced the condenser . When re installing I couldn't get the points to meet fully. Two piece points. I got a new set and the fiber washer under the pivot looked better , but when installed the contacts are only meeting about 60%. How the spring is clamped with the wires seems to change the height.
HOW do you tighten the bolt to secure the wires? No room in distributor . If I do it outside, It won't go down all the way on pivot shaft . |

Sounds like you are describing a big cap 40hp distributor issue. On a big cap 40hp distributor the easiest way to work on points and condenser is to disassemble the distributor and work from a better angle. There's a reason the design only lasted a few years. _________________ Roads Scholar &

Some points are better than others. Some points require them to be bent in order to flatten the mating surface. A picture would help to understand what is needed. Make sure nothing is under the flat part that screw holds down. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]
