I'm new, so don't jump on me too hard! I am restoring a '74 THing and I cannot read the terminal numbers on the Wiper motor. I do have a good wiring diagram and all the correct wires ready to plug in, but I cannot determine which wires go where. Don't want to guess and burn out the winding. Does anyone have an actual photo with either the terminal numbers or wiring colors showing, or marked on the photo, than can send me? I'd even take a written description!
many thanks.

There is a Thing/181 forum for your question but this might help too.
Where in Indiana BTW?

I believe this is the correct one

Oh yeah, Welcome aboard
@ TurboBlue: That's a diagram for an older European 181 (note the tail lights, front marker light, dash mounted windshield washer switch, ect...)

Hi Semper Dad.
According to the wiring diagram there is no terminal 31b on the wiper motor. I'm not saying that the photo you posted is incorrect. I've heard that there are a few different wiper motors in our Things with different terminal markings on them. Here's a version with colors and numbers that correspond to the wiring diagrams in the tech section (and hopefully to most of our cars.)

I have to agree with you. All I did was a quick search in the gallery and came up with multiple pictures. I thought I picked the right one. Mostly concerned with the wire/color positions and didn't really didn't pay attention the the terminal designations. I think some of those pictures should be deleted. Thanks for stepping forward. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

Pic is from vintage bus.com for 73/74 Thing.
I dunno if it's right, would think so. _________________ Gary

It's wrong [for a US 73-74], that diagram is for an older model European 181 _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

Yes. Wrong. The wire colors are different. The headlamps have "city light" bulbs in them. The European style front turn signals are missing the side marker lights that the U.S. version has. The tail lights are all wrong. There's no reverse light. The wiper switch is a dash mount switch. There is no key. There are no terminal designations . . . I think you get my point.
That drawing has caused many of us a lot of frustration. Not to worry. Adequate wiring diagrams can be found right here in the Samba technical section.

Problem is when you do a search on "wiper wiring" in the 181 gallery you get like 7 photos. Some from Kubelmann and some from Sam W. Kind of confusing. Captain, I saw your recent upload, I think it is the clearest (naturally). _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |
