Hi All,

As I grind into year 3 of spending all my spare time and money on restoring my dad's 1971 Ghia, figured I share some bits of the process. I thank you all for the information I've learned on TheSamba in this time. Anyways I've seen chatter here and there about using bedliner products on inside fender wells and on the bottom of the floor pans...doesn't seem like a lot of people go this route though. Car is still in pieces but so far I like the result, and I have no worries about the longevity of the coating.

The chassis and floor pans are topcoated top and bottom with Upol Raptor UP0820V. For this I used a cheapy HF HVLP with the tip drilled out to the exact size of "bigger than it was", the paint gun and higher air pressure gets you a smoother texture like epoxy primer. Also when going for a smooth texture I cut it down with 20% Eastwood Universal Urethane Reducer. For the trunk area and fender wells I used a Schutz gun to get the desired classic lumpy texture. This should help with road noise (called NVH in the auto industry these days) and it's tough as hell. It also helped to hide any fugly bumpy areas I couldn't get out during prep work, this is kinda the beauty of using the Schutz gun.

Depending which area, either Upol DTM Epoxy or Eastwood DTM Epoxy Primer /Sealer was used on the bare metal. Then the Raptor 2k as topcoat.

The nose section. The Schutz gun was used here...very satisfying to spray. A word of caution: This stuff gets gummy and tough QUICKLY. Overspray really sucks, somehow by the end of it I always have black specks for the next few weeks on my glasses, my tools, my dog, etc.

The chassis. Many different 2k products used here, but for the pans and tunnel it was Upol Epoxy base and the Raptor Liner topcoat with an HVLP gun. I didn't want the heavy texture here, just the toughness of the urethane bedliner. I'm relying on interior sound deadening mat to help with road noise under the chassis...

I love the texture. Well done!

Thanks Viiking. The best part about these 1 gallon Raptor kits is that you can get them for around $160 (some days discounted on Amazon), so it's pretty affordable compared to every other 2k product I've had to buy. This is my first restoration, and the money that goes into the consumables alone is crazy. I lost count on my total spent on this nut and bolt restoration at around $20k.
