I saw this filter set up in a car that was at our meet over the weekend. I've not seen this before. Anyone have any experience or knowledge about this filter?
It appears to have the input (?) from the T-adapter at the pressure switch location, and the return seems to be thru the stud that it is mounted on - which is one of the studs for the alternator stand.
Seems like a convenient setup that does not have any issue with exhaust clearance etc. and could be retrofitted more easily.

Not unusual, they've been around for a number of years.
I forget it's origin. _________________ Glenn

When you change that filter, how do you avoid making a big mess?
Sure don't want oil on fan belt or crank pulley! |

Cusser in your experience did these filters offer any real improvement over a stock VW system? |

I do not know, as the only engines we tore down and rebuilt were private customers' cars.
But we had maybe 50 rental dune buggies and maybe 10 VW sedans, and I remember most of the dune buggies had these filters on their engines. These buggies were built elsewhere and purchased by Sun Buggy Rentals, used a full-size VW pan, and sat four.
I would guess that such filters do help some, as particles suspended in the oil would get filtered out; it's just that some of the oil would go through the filter on each rpm, some would not, so any particles may not be caught by the filter as quickly as on a full-flow filter system. Remember that when oil is cold it goes through the relief valve system and doesn't get filtered even on a full-flow filter system. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Thanks for the reply Cusser as I had never seen one of those before. Maybe they were not very common on the East coast. |

A bypass filter was good enough for early Porsche 356 engines, so it must have done SOME good!
One comment about these was (emphasis mine):
Quote: |
The 356 oil filter is a bypass filter which means that it samples a portion of the oil with each pass and filters much smaller particles than can a full flow filter. Bypass filters don't need a bypass valve and use a different filter medium than full flow filters. Filtration of 95% of particles larger than 1 micron seems possible. There is probably a trade off between the filter particle bypass size and the flow, and probably an optimum for our engines. |
Then again, if you want a really unconventional filet setup, go for one of these vintage filters!:

Then there was the filter that used a roll of toilet paper. |

I wonder how long Stilco stayed in business with a " lifetime guarantee" on this? |

Don’t know if that’s the Purolator system. I sold one, recently. There was a kit probably from Brazil that was available years ago. I think it went between the cooler and case. You had to trim the bottom of the fan shroud for it.
Edit: Found the pic of mine. It looks the same. _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3” narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far

As good as a full flow? No, but Better then a screen? Yes, and it will filter the oil as long as the Engine is running, it is hooked to the main oil supply before the bypass. |
