So I did the search thing and read quite a few of the posts. It confirmed that I am not the only one that finds the repos are substandard, and that's being kind to the manufacturers. So after a year of once a week tightenings I am thru. Is there a repo out there that is worth a tinkers damn? If not how can one identify a factory mirror? I have been checking the classifieds here and have not found one that floats my boat. there is a cool looking one in the classifieds by oldbugs.com but it telescopes and I'm not sure how it would look on my bug. Any help, suggestions, or even rude comments are much appreciated. Over and out. Very Happy

I would suggest getting an OEM mirror even if the mirror glass is not in good shape or even missing. I used to have a piece of mirror glass cut at a glass shop and I would install it in the frame. Unfortunately the last time I did this was in the 1970's so I do not remember the details of exactly how I retained it in the frame. Maybe someone else who has done it could add to this.

hey thanks for the reply. I agree with getting a factory mirror, now I just have to find one. I believe I have stumbled on to the root problem, the hinge pin. I don't think the serrations are doing their job and I am probably exacerbating the problem by trying to tighten the nut on the hinge pin. Tomorrow sounds like a splendid day to spend in the garage doing a little exploratory surgery.

Best to mention year of the beetle and if there is a particular shape of mirror you are looking for.

#1 & #2 were common VW dealer ones:

Back in the late 1970s, while driving my 1971 Convertible one of the side mirror glass just fell out. I had a glass shop cut a piece of mirror to fit, and they glued it back in. Cost was $2.00 then !!!

More recently, I had to re-glue the mirror glass into my 1988 Mazda truck mirror. I used silicone glue. See this thread for photos https://www.mazdaworld.org/threads/wobbly-mirror-g...ost-762292

I've had Wolfsburg West's round-style mirror (#2 in the illustration above) on my '63 for the last 5 years. It's very well made and the chrome still looks like new > Outside mirror
