Worked on a good friends 67 westy yesterday figuring out some shifting issues.

While inspecting everything I found the front shift coupler is loose. Its a single screw type shaped like a ring. I tightened it down well past the point of comfort and it was still loose. I removed the grub screw and swapped it with another, same result.

So I would say the ring shaped coupler is wallowed out bit as is the long shift rod dimple.

My first thought is to drill the dimple all the way through and bolt it together. I could try to replace the ring by itself but I still think the shift rod hole won't hold it in place. If you have any other suggestions please post them. It's an odd design having the entire thing held together with a single screw and the ring with minimal surface area.

Thanks everyone!

The set screw is supposed to go into a hole drilled in the shift rod itself. It’s how it indexes the two rods together and have the shifter in the front cup of the shift rod the set screw doesn’t clamp down on the shift rod but just goes into the existing hole and keeps the two parts from pulling apart.

Yup. Got the grub screw in the dimple. Problem is the dimple is wallowed out so no matter how tight its going to wiggle.

Thanks man.

I think on a 67 both rods just have holes, no dimple. If the nut is tight and it still doesn’t clamp down you might pull it apart and see which piece or pieces are worn.

I've seen one where the collar was rotated and a new hole drilled through the screw hole into the shafts, creating a new and tight connection. The issue is holding everything absolutely still so you don't get your shifting messed up by changing the clock of the tubes. That particular front rod had 2 extra holes, so I imagine they found out the hard way about clocking.
