Nice buy! I have a red 66 as well, welcome to the club.
Is that hazard/emergency flasher button stock? Mine has a horrible RadioShack button there for the horn.

Yes that flasher knob is stock. If I remember right it’s a 66 only part. It changed in 67 and again in 68. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Turning out nice! Great find by the way. Question: In the headlights, that silver area where the parking bulb sits, is there any way to clean up the existing one I have and just spray it with a Hi-temp silver? I was thinking of sanding mine down and doing that, unless there's better ways?
Yes that part can be painted. I have a few that I powder coated white. There is a nice thread on there that shows how the assembly goes together .

Got the rear bumper installed today. I have new rubber grommets and new brackets. I went to replace them and the bolts are pretty well seized. Don’t want to break them. So I put the bumpers on the old rusty brackets. This winter I’ll take them off and put the new ones one.
Also, the new knob for my Hurst shifter came today. Can’t wait to get it installed.

You could probably take the bumper off and give the brackets a quick sand and paint to make them look a bit better. Just a thought. New bumpers look like they fit nicely.

I could. But I already have new ones, and there are a lot of other things to do to it I’d rather focus on. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Well, owned it for about 3 weeks now. My wife in her Fastback, and our friend in his 66 Bug went to an all makes show in Charles Town WV today. Had no thoughts of winning anything. The car looks nice, but it needs a lot of work to be where I want it. I was surprised to hear my name called when I won people’s choice. There were over 300 cars at the show. I’m flattered. I’m just building the car I have envisioned since the late 80s.

Because I was in a good mood, went out to the garage and did a few things. I’ve had a genuine Hurst shifter for a while now. Needed the right car for it. I think it goes nice with the Formuling Wheel. So, I finally installed it. Also put some clamps in to hold the cup holder.
Oh, and yes, the key chain is a mini BRM. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Car is coming along fine! Quick question, how does the Hurst trigger shifter work, is that for reverse? By pulling the trigger is it like pushing down on the ball and essentially going to reverse gear?

Yes, that’s exactly how it works. The trigger allows it to go into reverse. The modern Empi version is a clone of this one.
With that, a big ‘ol box of interior came yesterday. New seat upholstery, door panels, and carpet. I also have a headliner I had collected for my other 66.
I’ll hold off on posting the seats and door panels. Got to keep some of it a surprise.
I started powder coating tin last weekend as well. Dug out a nice but dirty set of heater boxes from my collection, and started blasting them too. Again, I’ll wait to post the color of the tin until it’s in the car. Got to keep some of it a surprise.
This is the shroud I bought to replace the one with all the holes from the voltage regulator in it. Failed to take any pics after I’d blasted it.
Here are the heater boxes
The new exhaust arrived a few days ago.
And finally, the interior light was missing as were the wires to make it work. Fished the wires and put a new light housing and LED bulb in.

New stickers came today for the horn button. I ordered 8 just in case they don’t hold up. I will say, I have VW logo stickers from the same company on the center caps of the wheels of my Ghia, and after I think 2 years now they still look good.
I’ve also powder coated quite a bit of tin for the engine once I pull it and do the refresh. I’ll post it when I reveal it. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Got some work done on the car this weekend. I’ve been slowly gathering used tin and powder coating it. Got some more this weekend.
The hub on my Formuling wheel looked awful. I fixed that.
Powder coated it semi gloss black. Pretty close match to the original column color. When I swap the beam out I’ll powder coat the column.
Moved on to the inspection plates in the trunk.
And finally, the ugly incorrect antenna. Got one from a friend and swapped it out. Much better.
Getting close to having all the tin done. When show season is over I’ll pull the engine and go through it. Replace the leaking exhaust, clutch, etc.
Lastly, this arrived today.
I’ve had it for years. Been waiting for the right car to put it in. Bill over at Sparxwerks did an amazing job on it. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

I thought this area looked familiar! My moms side of the family grew up there, the land for Jefferson County memorial park was given to the city by my great grandfather. Morison st. next to the park is named after my family. Nice looking bug, looked like a good show! |

That distributor is beautiful, I have never run a VW with an 010 but I would like to try one sometime. When I had my stock 66 1300 it ran well with both the stock dizzy and a German 009.

Thanks! Cool to know about your family.
I grew up outside of Los Angeles in a town called Glendora. It was founded by a Whitcomb. My parents moved to Los Angeles in 1976. When they went to the DMV after we moved there, they asked if we were related to the Whitcomb’s from Glendora. Eventually we moved there. As it turns out, George Whitcomb, the founder of Glendora, looks exactly like my Dad. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980
