Does anyone know what's going on with these rear fender holes and why the grommets don't fit? This is from a 1974 beetle I'm thinking of buying and I can't properly identify those fender bumper holes because they look larger and rectangular for some reason.

74 bug in the US had energy absorbing bumpers which required a larger bracket for which the hole thru the fender got bigger. It looks like a previous owner put 68 to 73 brackets and bumper on the car. Actually they look like pre 68 brackets and pre 68 bumper. Sorry about that

Seems like the wrong year fenders as well. Is there a fix for this without having to get new year appropriate 74 fenders and bumper?

It looks like those are pre 68 brackets and they might be mounted on the wrong sides. You may want to try switching them left to right or visa versa.

Not 74 fenders or bumpers.
You'll have to fabricate something. _________________ Glenn

That's what I was afraid of. Maybe easiest fix would be some custom 3D printed grommets that cover the hole.
