I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I am looking for a wiring harness. I have seen repos mentioned in a bunch of threads, but nothing recent. I believe my harness should be wrapped in a plastic sleeve, as what remains in the bus is wrapped so. Does anyone know a good source that makes replacement harnesses? I checked WW for a Wire Works harness, and the only go back to 55. What remains of mine is an incomplete and severely hacked piece, so it can't be used as a template. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,

Wiring Works has done them but you usually need to send them a good pattern. I've used VW Looms out of the UK with decent results. It's been a few years but I think they're still doing them...

That clip came from Erich K. who is one of the 'first generation bus savers'. He probably got this clip early on, way before Y2K. Seeing pics of the buses that got cut up back then, can get a little graphic...
the clip looks great, hope you held up a paint chart to the og sample before you blasted away. |
If this clip was saved, then I'm sure a lot of the other remaining pieces went to save other buses.
I appreciate the info Guenter! |

It’s definitely in better condition than I expected. I’m going to be spoiled from this. Not what I’m used to seeing and working on.
Thanks Stan! |

I'm still not ready to start working on the bus, but thought it would be fun to check out the rear chassis section. I ended up digging a huge pile of sand, dirt, gravel and shells out of it. One bolt came out too. I have no idea why it would have been in there. The nuts must have preserved it.
I scraped off some grease build up and found some OG chassis grey paint:
Since I went this far, I decided to sand blast it. It looks like it had been blasted some time in the not too distant past, but it needed a refresher. I ran out of sand immediately, and was not able to get any more today. I ended up digging the glass beads out of my cabinet and blasted away. It worked like a charm:
I am super happy with the overall condition of it. Very minimal rust. It makes me wonder what the rest of the bus that this came from looked like!
Also had my first sighting of a 29 part number:
Happy New Year! |

Just stumbled on his thread ……. Glad you guys made it all the way home safely and with you’re new project. Still bummed about the timing of our chat. You guys would have been rock stars if you would have showed up to Chip Star with you’re new rig!!! Looks like you got your hands on an adventurous project. Determination will get you to that point where you’d like for it to be. Looking forward towards your build.
I still need to get over to my buddies shop to take some pictures of the Barney Deluxe you were asking me about. |
I was pretty nervous driving that far with the bus on the trailer. Every time it bounced, it got lower to the ground. We had to reattach the straps many times, but made it back relatively unscathed.
We are hoping to get started on it soon. I can't wait!
If you are able to get those pictures, that would be great. My friend would be stoked!
Thanks,

I was lucky to find these windows with frames. I feel like they are pretty significant pieces to this puzzle. They’re going to need some help, but no worries. Hopefully we can get the hinges freed up!
Thanks Dai!

I don't want you to be distracted from the other projects...BUT I will still encourage this kind of work because it's awesome to see it taking some small steps forward. I will also concur. There are times where the bus never moved in my garage, but I would periodically have to sweep up dirt (and rust) that fell out on its own. You're an East Coast guy though. I know that you're not scared. |
Haha. I’m going to try and do a little something here and there. I figure the doors need to be fixed before a lot of the other work can start and a door at a time doesn’t take up much space!
I remember when the 15 Window stopped marking its spot. It was hard to fathom after all crustiness it held on to. I suspect this bus will behave similarly.
Luckily I find sweeping therapeutic. |

My son got me a license plate for my birthday. It makes the engine lid look enormous. I wonder if they made frames for this size plate?
I ordered some metal from DKB in CA
Even though I'm not going to start working on the bus until we get some other projects finished, I figured I would pick at the drivers door since it's sitting in the shop. I figured it would be easier to carry without the window frame. I have discovered new areas where crustiness lurks. It's hard to believe how much loose rust this frame held on to. Every single time I repositioned it a new pile of rust appeared.
So far I haven't destroyed anything. I've been letting the hardware soak in penetrating oil. Some of it has come loose, and some not so much. I stopped before I damaged the piano hinge frame. The two bottom screws that hold the glass frame together were rusted away, but the two top screws are holding on. Next time...
The glass looks good!

I started looking for metal for the bus and was lucky to talk to Manny AKA BlastmasterMannyFresh AKA Swapmeet Specialist. He's got a sweet 54 Ambulance and had some metal left over. We made a deal, and I headed to Long Island, NY VIA the Cross Sound Ferry from New London, CT to Orient Point, NY. It's been a while since I've been on a ferry. What a trip!
Thanks Manny! |
