I really like the design of this cupholder...very sturdy and well made. But I wasn't crazy about the drilled holes design, so I added some wood side pieces in hopes of matching my fake woodgrain dash. Very Happy

Wood is 1/4" thick poplar sheet, from the Home Depot "hobby wood" section. Using the finest CAD methods (Cardboard Aided Design), I made a template and cut out the pieces, finished with disc sander and rounded all the edges. Stained 'em with American Walnut stain, then a shot of clear matte to finish. Finally, scuffed up the cupholder sides and glued them in place with 2-part epoxy.

That looks so much better than it did originally! Great idea. I might try and do something similar but with gloss black panels. Cup holders may be the only real improvement in cars over the last 50 years ...

Thanks!!

I though I'd add that I sanded a slight bevel in the leading edges of the wood pieces so they would fit snugly up against the top cupholder ring. And a little extra relief for the welds, whatever it takes to get the wood to lie flat against the metal before epoxy.
