Hey guys! I’ve been MIA, hope everyone’s well.
I’ve been wanting to address dim bulbs in my 64. The car is still 6V and I’ve known I needed fi clean some grounds and contacts - easy right?
I started last week and replaced both battery cables and the trans to chassis ground strap with nice braided ones from WW.
This evening, I removed one tail light at a time - photographing the wires for reinstallation. I used my Dremel with a wire attachment to clean the contacts, the posts on the lamp housing, and the area they contact under the fender. Again, I did this for both sides and reinstalled each with a LED bulb in the tail/stop light position. I kept standard bulbs in the turn signals.
I removed the front wheel and cleaned the contacts on the brake switch. I forgot to take a photo here… I reinstalled the wires and just assumed I put them back correctly.
I then moved up front and did the same: remove, clean, new bulb, reinstall - using regular incandescent bulbs here too.
I had been testing as I went mostly because I was excited to see if the LEDs were a noticeable change. Everything seemed fine and was working well throughout.
After I buttoned everything back up I did a final test and found that the running lights worked correctly, the brakes worked correctly, the turns worked correctly - but if I stepped on the brake while a turns worked correctly signal was on it would instead make both side’s turn signals flash together.
I’ll check grounds again but after everything that seems curious. Part of me wonders if I connected the wires reversed in the brake switch or if there’s something else I should check.

Can anyone weigh in on the brake swirl wires or anything they thing could cause such behavior?

Thanks!

From your video, it looks like to me you have your brake and parking light wiring swapped? The parking lights are normally 5W while the brake lights are 18W or 21W. So the brake lights should be around 4x brighter. Your brake don't appear to be much brighter.

This could be an issue with the LED bulb. I have run into dual filament LED bulbs that actually feedback voltage out one circuit when the other is powered.
Simple test... replace the LED parking/brake light with the OE incandescent bulbs and see if the problem remains. It could be a bulb problem.

Check your grounds. Try using a jumper wire with alligator clips to directly ground the metal frame of the light assemblies to a known good ground point. If this improves the workings of the lights then it is a grounding problem.
Check your wiring... actually test the bulb in the socket to make sure the LED bulb is working as expected. The parking light wire powers the dim circuit thru the LED and the brake wire powers the brighter circuit. A mixup could be caused by the bulb being inserted backwards in the socket... check the offset bayonet lugs, it can be forced to fit backwards.
