This looks like one of the drawings on the on the cover of The Owner's Viewpoint, which was an advertising brochure from 1961.
Very cool that they created the actual vehicle. |
The M-1041 in the lower right indicates this is a VW press photo so maybe it existed first.
You are right though, very similar
|
The bus in the picture is a '62. Owner's viewpoint is '60 or '61, and shows a bullet turn signal bus in the drawing, so I would say the bus was created from the drawing on the owner's viewpoint.
There are a lot of things that tie back to the Owner's Viewpoint. Magazine ads, sales literature, a press photo, modern dishware, modern toys. And I have the ultimate Owner's Viewpoint collectible, one of the buses featured in it, from my hometown even. _________________ .

I wonder if they chose the buses from the Owner's Viewpoint because they are generic logos with no business name on them?

You're absolutely right. That is the collection from the cover art.

I remember reading about that, and I agree. What a great item of provenance for your bus. Could you link the thread to refresh our memories? Also, did you make it look just as it did in the book? _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

I'm kind of surprised nobody has recreated this logo for their restored bus. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

I wrote about it in my column in HotVWs. I don't know that there are anything here on thesamba about it. I have a color photo of it from 1958. A friend of mine's grandfather is Mr. Holsinger, who is also featured in another piece of literature "Mr. Holsinger is in it for the money". As far as I know, it is the only bus featured in VWoA literature that is definitively known to exist today. Other fleet vehicles are known to exist, but can't be known whether they are the ones shown in literature.
The bus is in the body shop currently. It will be painted exactly as the first incarnation of logos were, which is as it was shown in The Owner's Viewpoint. It got repainted once, and some of the logos are slightly different now.
Mr. Holsinger pictured in some random '61 doubledoor panel that he never owned:

Yes. exactly as used for the first few years. Period organs are pretty cheap and easy to find these days. _________________ .
