Wow, alot going on here. Chrome hubcaps as well.
I see no evidence of a sound system. The kids in the back probably can't hear a thing. Great photo! |
Looks like a cord across the bed near the left leg of the fella in the middle. |
Couldn't help myself. Dropped them an email. Can't wait to hear from Mr. Graham.
Hi Dale,
Thank you for the photo you sent of the Narrogin Youth Service in 1960. We have some information regarding this service in our local history collection. I’ve contacted the churches who probably ran this as a combined event. So far the Uniting Church has answered with no result, but they are very interested in what I find. The Municipality of Narrogin became the Town of Narrogin and in 2016 the Shire and Town combined into the Shire of Narrogin. I doubt there are any examples of the Kombi ute still in Narrogin. It makes a great stage.
Mackie Park (named after Dr. David William Hartnell Mackie, who was a doctor here from 1911-1937 until his death, and Mayor in 1914 – 1918.) For several years a Commonwealth Youth Sunday event was run in Narrogin. Our collection of local papers is offsite but I will collect the 55- 60 papers for the articles written about this event if that would help.
In the photo I have attached, numbered RN2856, you can see the peace celebrations at the end of WW1 in the park. It is a slightly different angle showing the Town Hall, but of the same intersection. In RN305 you can see the march leading up to the Youth Sunday ceremony in 1959.
We have taken photos of Mackie Park from the same viewpoint today, while a staff member was at lunch, and I have included a range of these. Your photo is taken from in front of the Rest Centre (brick building you can see in the photo)
I hope that some of this is useful to you. As the newspaper article we found mentions Stewart Graham, a local farmer, I will also ask him for information regarding the event when he comes in out of the paddock tonight.
There is a charge for a local history request such as yours, but as you have supplied us with a photo that we didn’t have, I think we can waive the charge.
Hope some of this helps.

^^ that number plate code SS was for east lothian in scotland and was used (in that form) until 1955. wonder if they crossed paths with this one?

Hi everyone, here is some context for the next two photos.
Unsure if it occurred anywhere else in the world, but in my state in Australia, a husband and wife drove their car around in the late 1960s / early 1970s and photographed homes. Then, they would print the photos, attach them to a cardboard magnetic calendar and hope to sell the item back to the home owner.
When they passed, their collection of unsold photographs were donated to the state. I've been through the photos where there are cars looking for VW's. I've found some and here are two that contained splitty Kombi's with signwriting. Presumably, the workers took the company car home on the day the photo was taken. I hope you enjoy them.

That scam reminds me of back in the 90s my dad and I were working on our freshly painted 69 bug out in the driveway and this guy in a little airplane was doing a similar thing. Damn thing was buzzing over the neighborhood all afternoon! He came to our house a couple weeks later trying to sell us prints of the aerial photos he'd taken. My dad told him he ought to give it to us for free to make up for the annoying noise we had to deal with all day. _________________ 1973 Superbeetle: 1st car, owned since age 12. Off the topic but I'm interested to know why the houses are raised off the ground? Flooding? Pests? |
see this wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queenslander_(architecture)
but basically ventilation, pests, flooding, uneven site and ease of moving house!
I know my aunts house now has water tanks in the space under it to collect the rainwater from downpipes... _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut
